White Tower of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki

Must see · Observation Deck · Landmark
Thessaloniki's most recognizable landmark, White Tower of Thessaloniki is as enigmatic as it is photogenic. The precise date of the tower's construction remains disputed, though many historians now believe the Ottomans erected this structure shortly after the army of Sultan Murad II captured the city in 1530. Possibly designed by architect Mimar Sinan (who made his name building similar structures in other Ottoman territories), the tower probably replaced a pre-existing Byzantine building. Photographed from every angle, the image of the cylindrical tower has found its way on every type of souvenir, becoming the quintessential symbol of the city. • A small museum inside. It served as a prison, observation tower and part of the city defence system. A very easy-to-find landmark. Plenty cafes and bars nearby.  more »
  • Very detailed exhibits, much more information than we had the time or interest to consume! Very nice with the audio guide linked to all the exhibits. If you're into history at all, this is a must do (and the view from the top is tremendous!)
  • This was a great way to get to know Thessaloniki. Obviously, if you only have one day here, this is the place to go. There is a museum inside on 7 floors telling all about the history of the area and the city. We learned a lot and the view from the top is great. 3 euro entry for adults and free for kids under 18. The boardwalk area all around is awesome for walking around too.
  • As oppose to many museums you usually visit and they don’t provide the voice tour on, at least English language, here it’s very well organized and voice tour from a guide device is pretty detailed. It is tower belonging to Ottoman age fortress that is used as the Thessaloniki museum. For each floor you have a topic of the floor (voice as well) and for each segment of the floor exhibit you have a story. On top of the tower there is a magical view to the city and the sea.
  • Nice view both day and night. The tower is illuminated at night. In the afternoon, you can visit different excursions: a boat trip or a tour of the White Tower. The roof of the White Tower offers beautiful views of the city, mountains and the sea.
  • You should definitely visit this place. Very nice view from the top floor to the city. It contains interesting information about Thessaloniki. The information is very well organized through interactive resources, as well as staff who provide additional information to those interested.
