White Tower of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki

Observation Deck Landmark
Thessaloniki's most recognizable landmark, White Tower of Thessaloniki is as enigmatic as it is photogenic. The precise date of the tower's construction remains disputed, though many historians now believe the Ottomans erected this structure shortly after the army of Sultan Murad II captured the city in 1530. Possibly designed by architect Mimar Sinan (who made his name building similar structures in other Ottoman territories), the tower probably replaced a pre-existing Byzantine building. Photographed from every angle, the image of the cylindrical tower has found its way on every type of souvenir, becoming the quintessential symbol of the city. Learn about the colorful history of this part of Greece by visiting the museum housed inside. White Tower of Thessaloniki is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Thessaloniki Edition.

Where to stay in Thessaloniki

If you come to Thessaloniki to splurge and pamper yourself, book a room at one of the city's five-star hotels, providing spacious rooms packed with amenities, as well as access to rooftop bars, ground-floor restaurants, and fitness facilities. Centrally located hotels also provide secure parking, complimentary Wi-Fi, and quick walking access to the city's top attractions. On the other hand, if all you need is a comfortable bed and a warm meal, consider a budget-friendly hostel or family-run inn in the residential areas outside the city's central area.

  • Its the most amazing building in Thessaloniki. Excellent view to the harbor and to the road next to it. Spectacular during the evening hours when the lights of the city are on.
  • Nice from the outside.. nothing special within if you can't read Greek.. it's a shame that all that history information signs are not in English
  • Historic defensive round tower on the sea front. The Tower is a museum covering the history of Thessalonica with each floor covering a different period. You rise through the Tower on a sloping passage that coils around the inside walls with each floor and exhibition in the centre. You eventually reach the top of the Tower with excellent views of the city and waterfront. We found the exhibits interesting but none of the information was in English. Well worth a visit for the views alone.
  • Definitely worth a visit to check out the tower and statue. Go at night for the free harbour cruises! And the 2 euro city tour from the bus stop nearby.
  • Wonderful history and view of city. Amazing that a prisoner painted the tower in 1890 to gain his freedom.
