Church of St.Sophia, Thessaloniki
(4.3/5 based on 380+ reviews on the web)
Church of St.Sophia represents one of the city's most important ancient religious structures, whose historical and architectural significance has earned it a place on the World Heritage List. Although the current building--based on Istanbul's Ayia Sofia--was erected in the 8th century CE, a church has stood at this location since the 3rd century CE. Its rich and varied history includes a period as the cathedral of Thessaloniki and several centuries where it served as a mosque. Tour the dark interior to discover relics from each iteration, including centuries-old mosaics, icons, and chandeliers. This is an active church, and services are still held here today; check online for details. To visit Church of St.Sophia on your trip to Thessaloniki, use our Thessaloniki tour planner.

  • Church included as patrimony of the humanity, located near the roundabout in Thessaloniki. Built on a former Church in the 3RD century, the present church was built around the 8TH century. It was a church, Mosque and Church again. In the 1890 there was a fire where suffered much damage. Restored later. The entrance is free. He is allowed to take photos.

  • In the Centre of Thessaloniki is the Church of Agia Sofia where it starts and the eponymous Street. This is a copy of the Hagia Sophia Church located in Istanbul. A huge and imposing building with many frescoes and icons and a very beautiful space around.
