We had a very nice and relaxing hike through the Agia Irini Gorge, were to see only slightly disappointed even no water today. Currently everything has dried up completely. Still a nice walk we did in 2, 5 h to the tavern. The way across the asphalt back to Sougia we have saved us and took a cab for €10. In the morning a bus from Sougia went at 7.00 to the entrance of the Gorge, after about 40 minutes we were there. The early start worthwhile since you can make then almost the entire walk in the shade at a pleasant temperature. We opted for this Gorge, to escape the masses in Samaria and we have in fact only very occasionally people hit and were able to enjoy so the hike alone.

Gorge-ous place! Very good alternative to the Samaria gorge but without the crowds, lots of shade and lots of oleanders making it picture perfect. Also a lot easier to organize yourselves with your own car because you can easily walk it up and down again in a day trip. And there are convenient bars at the start and end of the gorge.

Having planned a visit to the Gorge of Samaria, but being closed due to strong winds, the guides we have hijacked the Gorge of Agia Irini. Agia Irini is shorter than the more famous Samaria (about 5 km against 16 km), less crowded but no less spectacular. The path is not particularly difficult, but you still gotta pay attention to the various ups and downs and the roots on the ground. You will walk among large rock formations, high plane trees and cypresses, Sage plants and more flowers. On route you will also find some RV Parks where fill water bottles and some refreshments. There is also a relatively inexpensive restaurant at the end of the Gorge. Finished the route you will find the small village of Sougia, and the subtle Pebble Beach where you can swim before setting off again.
