Kastro Ke Medieval Ekklisia, Skiathos

4.7
#1 of 10 in Historic Sites in Skiathos
Take a step back in time by visiting the ruins of the ancient city of Kastro Ke Medieval Ekklisia. A thriving town between the 12th and 19th centuries, the cliff-side settlement overlooks the spectacular rocky beaches below. It's believed that the city was once home to 300 houses and 22 churches, but today only one church can be seen, along with a few restored houses. Explore the town and enjoy the views; consider combining your visit with a stop at the beach below, where you can grab a meal or drink at the on-site restaurant. The walk up can be quite steep, so wear comfortable walking shoes or rent a bike or car. The site is also notably uneven in many places, which may pose difficulties for those with mobility issues. • I reached the kastro drive because of weather conditions but in a quad would be beautiful. However the way to reach it is unpaved and in the final downhill there is a stone pavement close eye to go slow. Down the road there are 2 comfortable squares to park and drive the last 500/600 m walk where you face a path tracking. All this adventure takes you to a wonderful show with beautiful colors. There is also a small tavern where to get something to drink.

  • If you go to skiathos you cannot but visit Castro. You will find yourself amidst the ruins of a village that hosted the entire people of skiathos during the Turkish raids until you get up to the highest pumto of the promontory from where you can enjoy a breathtaking view. Recommended.

  • You can visit the northern part of the island in a boat trip. Who wants to go to the beach only, you can do this. For detailed explorations of the Kastro - hill the approach via the overland route is but preferable. The road from Skiathos town over at the Evangelistra-monastery is largely paved. A sign "Kechrias Monastery" marks the junction of the road to the Kastro. The sand road leads 1.5 km from now on in many switchbacks steeply downhill. Feasible for experienced skiers, but also with ordinary passenger cars. The sand road is in the last meters to the narrow road from natural stone paving and it is shaken through properly. The road ends at a small parking lot. From here, an also paved trail leads down to a place surrounded with concrete seats. From here, the small hike starts over to the Kastro - input. It passes through beautiful nature and has fantastic views of the East Coast. Kastro is a 120 mtr. high marble cliff, three sides framed by cascading down the steep cliffs. Between 1300 and 1830 capital of the island - the inhabitants of the island were moved here to escape pirate raids. A train bridge used to be the only connection - now men reached the cliffs above a concrete staircase that is secured with steel ropes. The Kastro area consists mainly of ruins, but four of the most important churches were renovated and information panels set up (also in English). At the Summit is a Summit Cross and a circular column made of concrete. The view from up here on the coast is breathtaking. Highly recommended for admirers of nature and history.
