Kastro Ke Medieval Ekklisia, Skiathos

4.5
#7 of 70 in Things to do in Skiathos
Take a step back in time by visiting the ruins of the ancient city of Kastro Ke Medieval Ekklisia. A thriving town between the 12th and 19th centuries, the cliff-side settlement overlooks the spectacular rocky beaches below. It's believed that the city was once home to 300 houses and 22 churches, but today only one church can be seen, along with a few restored houses. Explore the town and enjoy the views; consider combining your visit with a stop at the beach below, where you can grab a meal or drink at the on-site restaurant. The walk up can be quite steep, so wear comfortable walking shoes or rent a bike or car. The site is also notably uneven in many places, which may pose difficulties for those with mobility issues. Kastro is one historically important place for Skiathos and one must if you visit the island. We drove there and it is best to follow the road from Skiathos town and continue to run until you come to the approximate setters made the road down to the Kastro. Here, one should have the 4 x 4 and preferably a small car (jeep). Do not run all the way down without this! It's cramped and steep and sometimes you wonder if it is possible to get on. At the top of the Hill for "bros stone" starts are a nice parking space (gravel) that you should park at the if you don't have 4 x 4, in addition to two parking spaces in the bottom. These are small (10-12) place, but you can also Park in the twists and turns on the way down. To go, you need regular shoes. I would not recommend, but it's flipflops possible to get by with it. remember water and camera!

Located in the far north of Skiathos, the island is perhaps the most comprehensive Kastro attraction, since it combines history, nature and panoramic views of the northern coast as far as the eye. The charm of the ancient medieval ruins more or less preserved blends with the scent of Mediterranean creating immersive sensory experience. The inevitable Greek flag that, from the end of the headland, stands on the blinding blue of sky and sea brings back memories of Mediterranean scenarios. The mosque dates back to the period of Turkish domination coexists peacefully with the many dilapidated churches, among which the one dedicated to the Nativity of Christ; the latter presents an interesting cycle of frescoes in the late 17th century. Don't forget to take a bath at the beach below, only for water clarity and a view of the most significant historical and cultural heritage of the island.

Fork we decided it is not us for sightseeing and prefer to go to bathroom did heat and to go by car until there was not and the easiest way. The beach is very different from all other of the island (at least the ones we got paei) has black sand and rocks, wild beauty!!! But now if you got to descend and ascend later a rough dirt path Cana 15-20 minutes walking a baby in baby sling will very probably be the xanaskeftikeis. Why not intended nor an umbrella and natural shade ... so first, do not forget to take an umbrella and shoes thallasis sand burns. Dystychos from the many boats the water was not from the most pure and unique shop is there is a cheap construction, cost the Earth with very little variety and moderate quality and Brown only frappe!! Like trip but worth it.

Where to stay in Skiathos

Although most visitors to Skiathos flock to one of the island's beach resorts, staying outside the tourist-driven areas allows you to choose from less expensive rooms without compromising on comfort and proximity to the beach. Consider a self-catering apartment or small villa just outside Skiathos Town, or look for a budget-friendly room in one of the city's family-run inns. Another quiet and affordable alternative, the small settlements scattered along the island's coastline offer simple lodgings and plenty of privacy within driving distance of major urban attractions.
