Kastro Ke Medieval Ekklisia, Skiathos

4.7
#1 of 8 in Historic Sites in Skiathos
Take a step back in time by visiting the ruins of the ancient city of Kastro Ke Medieval Ekklisia. A thriving town between the 12th and 19th centuries, the cliff-side settlement overlooks the spectacular rocky beaches below. It's believed that the city was once home to 300 houses and 22 churches, but today only one church can be seen, along with a few restored houses. Explore the town and enjoy the views; consider combining your visit with a stop at the beach below, where you can grab a meal or drink at the on-site restaurant. The walk up can be quite steep, so wear comfortable walking shoes or rent a bike or car. The site is also notably uneven in many places, which may pose difficulties for those with mobility issues. • Great views over the sea. The road there is more legal than bad but you should most definitely is next to. Beautiful beach below the ruins with small tavern on the turquoise-blue sea.

  • Old remnants of fortification with inside walls of houses and Church Reached with difficulty by land better by boat from Skiathos along a steep trail. The sea view is exciting.

  • The 120 m high marble cliff to reach, to proceed first steep a very long, later paved path down. On hot days for hikers or pedestrian a task should not be underestimated. You can go with a terrain-grade vehicle, up down. The history of Kastros is to say, it was the capital of the island between 1300 and 1830. It served to protect against pirate raids and was gradually expanded to a fortress. At times, the entire population of the island lived up on the rocks. There were about 300 houses and 22 churches. The buildings stood close together, were all small and probably quite dark. Much is no longer extant. Since 2000, the area will be restored. Routes were created, information panels (in English) and four of the most important churches rebuilt. Otherwise, you should be walking. Every now and then you have to climb even a little. The view from up here on the turquoise sea and the small beach below is sensational.
