  • Sweetwater beach has to be one of the best places to pass a half-day on the southern coast of Crete. The crystal clear sea and the pristine beach (no unsightly buildings in view) make for a day, or ev...  more »
  • To reach this beautiful shingle Beach I strongly recommend getting there by boat from Loutro Sfakia or, as the downhill walk is particularly dangerous. The landing is done on the Jetty a tavern open throughout the tourist season, beginning of April-end of October, which bring food or drink becomes quite unnecessary since the kitchen is always open. At la taverna you can also rent at truly modest sun loungers and parasol. The beach is very long and the last part always stand naturists and even umbrellas further East are the preserve them. The sea is perhaps the cleanest and amazing I have met along the whole coastline of Crete and witness the tons of fish and other sea creatures that inhabit the area. Of course in September, the sun goes down before it goes into hiding behind the mountains, then suggest starting with the first boat in the morning. Since all return with the last concert in the evening, sometimes being cramped like sardines and vastly outnumbered, but the distance to be covered is short and critical situations I've never seen.

  • The South coast of Crete, the Libyan Sea, can be reached from both West and East, by foot along a stretch of the European path and 4. It is an area that encompasses the stretch from Sougia to Hora Sfakion or Sfakia, with the picturesque villages of Agia Roumeli, Loutro and fantastic beaches. The trails are a bit exposed and not to be taken lightly, however, there are alternatives if we don't feel hikers at all costs. There are regular services between the countries of this part of the coast, us, from Chania, we reached Sfakia and parked in the lot and then we went down to the new port from where there are several runs with ferry and taxi boat to Loutro, Glyka Nera, Agia Roumeli. The ticket of the taxi boat is eight euros per person round trip to the beach of Glykà End (sweet water, signs for the trail from a pan curve to make the last stretch on foot before reaching Sfakia direct to Sweet Water) where you get in little more than 10 minutes. lovely view with the Rocky Ridge that rises from the water, leaving then see a green line of tamarisk and the row of umbrellas. You landed on the deck of a beach taverna also operates sun beds and umbrellas, 6 euro for the day, the place is spectacular, we are in mid-September with a nice warm sun, just a little breeze that moves the old tamarisk trees at the foot of the rock. The beach of pebbles, is quite long, quiet, with a beautiful coloured sea that becomes deep quickly. The water is cool because of the presence of freshwater springs which lower, modestly, the salinity of the sea. Looking up happen to see bearded vultures or peregrine falcons atop elle rocks. If you dare suggest, if you arrived by boat, climb for a few hundred metres along the paths that lead to the beach both East and West to enjoy a wonderful panoramic view of the beach. At lunch, step into the tavern, still crowded, but not to expect much from the food. The view will satisfy you anyway. Farther from the beach is frequented by naturists. I think this is one of the most beautiful and charming beach of Crete and it's worth a trip if you're vacationing in the western part of the island. P.s. weather and ask of the winds that if blow from the South can make the sea difficult with problems for swimming and for transparency, clear otherwise.
