Drogarati Cave, Sami

3.8
#3 of 6 in Nature in Cephalonia
Explore a natural world deep below the ground at Drogarati Cave. The cave was discovered 300 years ago, when an earthquake created the opening. At 60 m (197 ft) below ground, the cave is about 18 C (64 F), and incredibly humid. Inside, you can appreciate the many stalagmites and stalactites that have been slowly developing over hundreds of years. Test out the acoustics in the cave's main hall, Sala of Apotheosis, where concerts and shows are often held. • I found it more impressive than it's more famous neighbour Melissani ... It's little but well preserved. Acoustics are apparently fantastic inside, concerts are held there. Unfortunately, you can't ge...  more »
  • We went on a rainy day as we were bored. 5 Euros to get in and it is a cave built up with calcium. Nothing too special about it - Melissani cave is definitely more recommended.  more »
  • Less crowded than Melissani, but even this unmissable (bring a sweater because it's cold!). Entrance fee is €5 per head and you can stay inside as much as you want. Really beautiful.

  • Long stairway down to it and back out again! Interesting and beautiful history. This is not for the faint hearted or difficult of movement. Although we did have elderly folk with us, so long as you take your time, you should be OK. But it is a long way down, and back up again! Slippery surfaces are to be watched out for, don’t go down in stilettos or flippers. There was a guide in the main chamber at the bottom, but he didn’t really seem to have anything to do. I did hear him call out “does anyone have any questions” but no-one did, so he sadly slumped back to his station. Basically, not nearly almost a world wonder, but very interesting, not to mention scary when you remember the amount of rock that is not supported above you except for the shape of the cave. Take an extra top down with you, it is quite cold down there too!! Plenty of ice cream and drinks are available, together with other entertainment nearby.
  • A little visit well worth the money I feel. It's a short explore of the cave but very safe with staff on hand to answer any questions. BEAUTIFUL!
  • Quite underwhelming. 100m underground to see a cave that has been made a tourist attraction. At the bottom a man in a high viz jacket greets you like the aftershave man in a nightclub who then uses his laser pointer to point out natural shapes that he dubs as sculptures made by nature. "Come over here, look, a cat facing the other way, a woman with a baby, an unhappy face and look, that is a carrot. Please tip me, the box is here." Only 4 minutes after leaving the payment kiosk, it's a bit of a cheek. It's all a bit of a shame as many of the large ones are broken off. Quite a few have been broken away to make official pathways for tourists. BEWARE. Some reviews on google are confused with a place further north with a boat trip on a lake. €5 adults €3 kids Sept 2017. My honest opinion, find the lake place near Sami and spend your money there. It's a tourist trap.
  • Oh well worth a visit. This exceeds expectations. I like the freedom to walk around and explore, we found cool cave bugs and the man in the cave is very knowledgeable
  • Quick side road visit. Big cave. Nice break from the heat. Not worth a 3 hour drive, only one giant cave. nice area pit stop with pool and cafe.
