Monolithos Castle, Rhodes

Categories: Castles, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4.7/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web
Perched atop Monopetra, Monolithos Castle offers views of the sea and two small islets below. The castle was built in 1480 to protect the island against potential attacks. To reach the ruins of this ancient castle, climb steep--and sometimes slippery--steps that are cut into the rock face. Along the way, notice the small piles of rocks gathered at the side of the route. Their meaning is unknown. Visit the small chapel inside the castle dedicated to St. Pantaleon. Take some time to appreciate the view from 236 m (774 ft) above the sea.
