Monolithos Castle, Rhodes
Categories: Castles, Tourist Spots
Perched atop Monopetra, Monolithos Castle offers views of the sea and two small islets below. The castle was built in 1480 to protect the island against potential attacks. To reach the ruins of this ancient castle, climb steep--and sometimes slippery--steps that are cut into the rock face. Along the way, notice the small piles of rocks gathered at the side of the route. Their meaning is unknown. Visit the small chapel inside the castle dedicated to St. Pantaleon. Take some time to appreciate the view from 236 m (774 ft) above the sea. Nice view! And lovely little church on top of the hill.
Great views, definitely worth the trip there. We were lucky to meet sunset right into the sea, stunning!
Great photo opportunity. The view is amazing.
Planned to visit the place in daylight but reached the place later than I thought only to find out it is great place to watch the sunset, beautiful pure landscape from the highest area of Rhodes.
Nice view of the west coast of Rhodos.
