Monolithos Castle, Rhodes
(4.7/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
Perched atop Monopetra, Monolithos Castle offers views of the sea and two small islets below. The castle was built in 1480 to protect the island against potential attacks. To reach the ruins of this ancient castle, climb steep--and sometimes slippery--steps that are cut into the rock face. Along the way, notice the small piles of rocks gathered at the side of the route. Their meaning is unknown. Visit the small chapel inside the castle dedicated to St. Pantaleon. Take some time to appreciate the view from 236 m (774 ft) above the sea. • Coming to the site it is possible to see in the background the castle on top of a hill. When it arrives on site has a climb but it's worth it for the view. There's a church where they make frequent masses. The lugal has a visual amazing!

  • After visiting the main attractions is the Church of St. Panteleimon Siany drove to another, not less important-Monolithos Castle, located in 5 km from Siany. On the way to the Castle, you can stay on a viewing platform overlooking the Castle, sea, do sightseeing, panoramic shots. There are small kiosks-shops. The castle of Monolithos in Greek means "stone" and is on the West coast of Rhodes, on the cliff with a height of around 250 meters. The castle was built in the year 1476 based on earlier Byzantine fortress by the Knights of St. John, and then rebuilt back in 1480-1489 Gg. Like all defensive structures of that period, the castle was built to protect the territory and the local population from attacks by pirates and other invaders. This impregnable Castle was never defeated. Is a two-tiered Castle Tower-donzhonom (main tower) on the upper level and walls at the edge of the cliff. At the foot of the Castle offers free parking. Up to the castle is a stone staircase. Entry, as in all "abandoned" knightly fortress Island, absolutely free. Over time, the Castle fell into decay and much of the ancient fortification was destroyed. The fortress is currently preserved a small snow-white St. Panteleimon Chapel (acting), which was built in 15 century and the outer walls of the Castle-fortress. Here are the ruins of a small chapel. There are also ancient cisterns that were used to collect rainwater. In the fortress are amazing trees growing right out of the stones. From the top of the Castle offers a great view of the Aegean Sea, neighboring islands. After visiting the Castle drove down the road to the coast, Fourni Beach, cool off in the waters of the Aegean Sea.

  • The monastery is located on a single large block of rock with both of there views as beautiful to look at from the opposite side. Even if "A stone" somewhat is at a dead end, it's still worth a visit.

  • Beautiful views all around with adjacent small isles and mountains. Short excursion from parking (beware of slope roadside while lot is quite limited) allows explore ancient ruins with modest chapel. Even better views from adjacent viewpoints with excellent panoramas. While visiting take some time buffer as goat stakes can slow you down on the road.
  • Breathtaking views. Be careful if you go with small children as the place can be dangerous.
  • Nice view! And lovely little church on top of the hill.
  • It is very beautiful breathtaking view but the castle is almost destroyed.
  • Amazing view. Free entrance. With small church inside
