Medieval City, Rhodes

Categories: Ruins, Historic Sites, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4.6/5 based on 2,000+ reviews on the web
One of Europe's best-preserved medieval towns, Medieval City serves as a blend of Gothic and Ottoman architectural styles, seemingly frozen in time centuries ago. The historical district is both a home to over 6,000 permanent residents and Rhodes' major tourist attraction, designated as a World Heritage Site. The town's medieval walls enclose Gothic military fortifications and castles constructed by the Knights of Saint John, as well as public baths and mansions erected by the island's Ottoman rulers. A compact area where two distinct cultures met, fought, and built, the old town also contains many well-preserved churches and mosques. • The quadrangle of the medieval Citadel that is awesome, take the street of the Knights and the Grand Master's Palace at sunset is something that will remain forever in the hearts of visitors. Every opening, door or yard takes the mind of the visitor back in time you seem to see even the Knights with armor, and armed to the teeth. The access doors are opened on the harbour with boundless horizons of a beautiful Turquoise. To finish shopping and eateries as the eye can see. To come back definitely.

  • Spend a couple of hours to walk into the narrow alleyways away from the crowds of tourists. Very nice and slow, through some open window you can see the locals live their lives. Nice restaurants and shops, cozy to sit at a Plaza and grab something to eat or drink and just people watch. Cobblestone streets so please have comfortable shoes.
