Medieval City, Rhodes Town

(4.6/5 based on 2,200+ reviews on the web)
One of Europe's best-preserved medieval towns, Medieval City serves as a blend of Gothic and Ottoman architectural styles, seemingly frozen in time centuries ago. The historical district is both a home to over 6,000 permanent residents and Rhodes' major tourist attraction, designated as a World Heritage Site. The town's medieval walls enclose Gothic military fortifications and castles constructed by the Knights of Saint John, as well as public baths and mansions erected by the island's Ottoman rulers. A compact area where two distinct cultures met, fought, and built, the old town also contains many well-preserved churches and mosques. Make the most of your visit by arranging for a guided walking tour. Add Medieval City and other attractions to your Rhodes Town trip itinerary using our Rhodes Town vacation builder.

  • This was our second visit to Rhodes, and we so enjoyed just wandering the old town. The walls with those massive gates are amazing. Around the harbour is very scenic. There is another photo around eve...  more »
  • A city remained in the "juice". A maze of alleys to discover with a good pair of athletic shoes. The very typical pavement of the old Rhodes is not for strollers. If you don't have a backpack for child, you will be left to the shoulders and arms. Wonderful site!

  • The medieval city of Rhodes, locally known as old town, locked inside high walls built in the time of the Knights of Rhodes, was declared patrimony of humanity by UNESCO in 1988. Also, very well kept and very nice to walk around.
