The Venetian Fortezza, Rethymnon

#2 of 8 in Historic Sites in Rethymnon
Historic Site · Tourist Spot
A relic of the Venetian occupation of Rethymon, The Venetian Fortezza stands in the center of town, offering 360-degree views of the coast below. In 1580, more than 107,00 Cretans were forced to help build the fort to protect the Venetians' last overseas colony. Unfortunately, several flaws, such as the lack of buttresses and a ditch, made the walls easy to scale without a ladder. In 1646, the Ottomans seized the fortress and settled the area inside. Many of the interior buildings have been destroyed, but the exterior fortifications remain intact. • Its definitely worth visiting the fort, alone for the great views over the sea and the city. We were there after lunch so it was very sunny and hot. I guess this would be a great place for sunset.  more »
  • the fort is imposing but somehow looks like it could be taken easily. Also interesting is the small chapel built onto the side of it. The views from the walls are great in every direction. See, town....  more »
  • This is a good time filler. With some good historical facts. Spent an hour here. Best time to go ,early in the morning to miss the crowds and the heat  more »
  • Good to explore with children, could do with some signs around the grounds explaining what things are, although you do get a free guide on entry.
  • Historically interesting, nicely kept site with some great views in all directions. Beware of visiting in the middle of the day though, because you're brutally exposed to the glaring sun. Good documentation in Greek and English and reasonable entry prices (10€ for the familiy ticket). Expect to spend about an hour to 90 minutes.
  • Nice evening walk. Very little shade. Time it right and you can catch the sunset.
  • It’s good to visit but this place needs a bit of refreshment and cleaning with good maintenance.
  • Beautiful place with lots of interesting history. Particularly lovely in the evening.
