3.7/5 based on 1,700+ reviews on the web
A relic of the Venetian occupation of Rethymon, The Venetian Fortezza stands in the center of town, offering 360-degree views of the coast below. In 1580, more than 107,00 Cretans were forced to help build the fort to protect the Venetians' last overseas colony. Unfortunately, several flaws, such as the lack of buttresses and a ditch, made the walls easy to scale without a ladder. In 1646, the Ottomans seized the fortress and settled the area inside. Many of the interior buildings have been destroyed, but the exterior fortifications remain intact. • Recommend to visit the fortress closer to sunset to first manage to walk around and see all the turrets, deepening, a semblance of the pyramids, and simply enjoy the opportunities of the city. The fortress has a fairly large interior space, so it's best to come early to have time to explore her etc sunset and nightfall. During sunset, Tower transformed the stones become not so old and cracked. Also fabulous looking at open sea. The fortress has a backlight, so in the dark here not to get lost. But be careful, slippery in some places and meet the big stones.
