Learn about traditional musical instruments at Stagakis Cretan Lyra Workshop, established in 1945. This family-run workshop makes high-quality lyras, favored by both amateur and professional musicians of local and international renown. Each instrument takes about a week to produce by hand, following the artist's specific requirements for tone and pitch. If you're looking for a personal, albeit rather expensive souvenir, consider purchasing a lyra, mandolin, bouzouki, or mandola. The store also sells disposable items, like strings and bows, as well as used musical instruments. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Rethymnon holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Stagakis Cretan Lyra Workshop and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

Where to stay in Rethymnon

A growing number of visitors to Rethymnon choose to stay in one of the surrounding villages, where air-conditioned rooms near well-developed beaches cost considerably less than in the city itself. The elegant guesthouses just outside town provide a quiet night's sleep, as well as quick access to good shopping and dining options. If you prefer to stay in the thick of things, book a room near the city's Venetian port, a lively area that's just a walk away from the center's major attractions.

  • The owner of this workshop is a master of building traditional kretan instruments. The business is owned by his family for 3 generations already. True legacy, masterful instruments. Very friendly staff, as i aksed about the instruments he called some guys from the back of the shop and they took some instruments abd performed 10 minutes of beautiful kretan music. We had a great time, could also watch the master building a lyra. Thank you!
