Rethymnon Old Town, Rethymnon
(4.7/5 based on 4,600+ reviews on the web)
Nestled between the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean and the remains of a 15th-century fortress, Rethymnon Old Town offers a labyrinth of narrow backstreets, soaked in history and lined by balconied private homes. Built almost entirely by the Venetians, this "palia poli" (old town) maintains its aristocratic medieval appearance, featuring graceful arched doorways and stone staircases. Indisputably one of Crete's best-preserved old towns, this neighborhood also contains the ruins of Byzantine and Hellenic-Roman structures, as well as a 17th century Islamic mosque located inside a building that once served as a Venetian church. Start your exploration at the neighborhood's landmark Venetian loggia, which houses the town's tourist information office. • A maze of small streets shopping or not. Very nice architecture. In October the streets are more sparse and so very nice to walk. Cute restaurants on the course.

  • This place is worth a look, not only with the overall tour and (accessible by car or public transport). Like all old cities of antiquity blows and energy walls of events accumulated over the centuries ... Very nice leisurely walk, sit in the little cafes with hospitable hosts. Afternoon walk is still too hot, but evenings are just wonderfully soft illumination increases the charm. We enjoyed walking in the evening Very recommend to visit.

  • A very beautiful city with its pedestrian streets and its beautiful houses. A small passage through the Venetian port is required. It's nicer to walk off season because in the summer, jostling in the streets, but definitely worth a visit. Do not hesitate to wander through the small shopping!
