Rethymnon Old Town, Rethymnon

(4.7/5 based on 4,600+ reviews on the web)
Nestled between the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean and the remains of a 15th-century fortress, Rethymnon Old Town offers a labyrinth of narrow backstreets, soaked in history and lined by balconied private homes. Built almost entirely by the Venetians, this "palia poli" (old town) maintains its aristocratic medieval appearance, featuring graceful arched doorways and stone staircases. Indisputably one of Crete's best-preserved old towns, this neighborhood also contains the ruins of Byzantine and Hellenic-Roman structures, as well as a 17th century Islamic mosque located inside a building that once served as a Venetian church. Start your exploration at the neighborhood's landmark Venetian loggia, which houses the town's tourist information office. • Worth a walk through the narrow streets of the city, to see old-Venetian or Turkish-surviving buildings. To climb to the fortress Fortezza and admire the views, or enjoy the sunset from the Regional Road that passes beneath the fortress! To see a theatrical performance "Erofyli" Theatre in the summer. To visit the small museum, which is temporarily housed in the Church of San Francesco, in the homonymous Street. To drink coffee in the afternoon, Venetian port, with attention to the Lighthouse! Stepping alleyways when the eateries and bars fill up students!

  • I chose to visit rethimno in the month of December and I thought it will be completely empty, yet the old town with its picturesque streets plakwstrwta the taverns with live music, strong kratolysan and them without the summer tourism. Worth walk in old town to explore to get photos and the night to rest and entertain with a rakomel okai music criticism.
