Heraion of Samos, Pythagorion

3.5
#1 of 11 in Historic Sites in Samos
One of the most important ancient sanctuaries dedicated to Hera and a World Heritage Site, still contains one of the tall columns built to support the temple's massive roof structure. The alleged birthplace of Hera, the wife and sister of Greek God Zeus, the site once provided the setting for an annual festival celebrated in honor of the goddess of marriage and the family. The single column still standing provides an ideal backdrop for snapshots of the history-steeped landscape. Round off your visit by exploring nearby Pythagoreion, an ancient city filled with Greek and Roman monuments. • You have to use your imagination, lots of imagination, to imagine how was this site during its heyday: the Via Sacra, the processions, the great Temple of Hera (the Roman Juno), other surrounding temples; I agree with readers that point out the State of neglect of the site, but a partial excuse I remember after reforms in Greece of money for services addressed to the public there are very few! To complete the visit, advice to travel soon after to the Museum in the capital, Vathy, to obtain a more precise idea of the Heraion.

  • The grounds are extensive. The site is difficult to find and a lot of the ruins are covered with plant growth. The information placards are strangely places and are faded.
  • The maintenance of such an ancient and historical unique place is very poor. Unfortunately, this has affected our experience negatively.
  • Very interesting to see. But it is a pity how nature gets it all back. Nobody seems to care.
  • I would love to see this place
  • Lots of ancient history, by the sea. A relaxing tour.
