Create an itinerary including Valley of the Butterflies
Explore the world of colorful insects at Valley of the Butterflies, a nature reserve famous for sheltering a tiger moth species native to the region. Watch the small river flow through this protected zone, transitioning to a waterfall that plummets into a green pool. Get a close-up look at the sweetgum trees, which host millions of caterpillars. If possible, time your visit for the end of the wet season, when the caterpillars transform into colorful moths. Before you go, stop at the park's natural history museum and see displays about native wildlife and a state-of-the-art moth hatchery. • Visit in June. A few butterflies only. 45-60 minutes walking/hiking up both, the lower and upper parts of the valley trough the forest and another 45 minutes for descending back. A small river runs along the path and small waterfalls are seen. 3 euro entrance fee. The property needs some maintenance and a proper management of the park. Parking places are organized between the upper and the lower part of the valley, along the main road.
  • A beautiful green valley with a fascinating amount of butterflies. Unfortunately, it's a tourist attraction with no added value. You go in a stream of tourists surrounded by prohibitions and then back out. I do not recommend a visit. Instead, I highly recommend a visit to the nearby Farm of Rhodes, a place that is cared for by people with a respect for animals and offers quality service to tourists.
  • Great visit on a warm day! Bring the kids, have a walk. Don't go crazy on the first butterfly you see. There are thousands waiting for you further up the park! Also look for the crabs running around. Fun to do with kids. Go early if you can. Like this review if you think it was helpful and if you enjoyed the pictures! Thanks.
  • The butterfly are really something interesting to see, they have found a place where to thrive. The valley is much cooler than the outside and it’s a great option for the hottest days. We parked and the monastery and walked down, I think it’s the easiest option (there are taxis that can take a driver to the start, but one of us just walked up while the others were walking the lower section).
  • Nice short path through nature (20-30 minutes) where you can see small butterflies in large numbers in some spots. Wear comfortable shoes. The path is fresh and easy. Nothing special but still recommended as tickets are not expensive and you can enjoy a unique area of the island.
