Archaeological Site of Olympia, Olympia

4.5
Live the spirit of the Olympic Games at Archaeological Site of Olympia, the birthplace of the world's most popular sporting event. The site of the first Games, held in honor of Zeus, took place in this spot in 776 BCE. Remains of food and burnt offerings unearthed in the area show evidence of a long history of religious activity at the site, dating back to a period long before the first Games. The ancient sanctuary contains the ruins of temples dedicated to Zeus and Hera, an altar area made for sacrifices, and an alleged tomb of Pelops, a figure in Greek mythology. To see where the ancient world's top athletes trained and competed, take a guided walk around the ruins. • We and others we have bumped into think the same. There draw card is the name, yes it is a big site with ruins laying everywhere. They have placed some pieces on top of each other that don't match, we...  more »
  • A spectacular site in its legibility and its historical importance, I would say of those visited in our archaeological tour in Greece, definitely the best. Unlike other sites, this is also more cared for and therefore more enjoyable. In the vast archaeological area can be easily recognized those that are the most important buildings, the gym, the two temples, the Filippeon and the magnificent stadium. For the visit, take into account an hour and a half/two hours. The advice is to give you an own guide (i downloaded it in PDF on the smartphone before the visit) because unfortunately, as for all sites visited, the information is very scarce and at the entrance is not provided even a plant or a simple brochure. Great flaw. In fact, in this as in other sites, there are historical stratifications of the various periods that can not be interpreted by non-insiders, without the support of a guide, buildings of the Archaic period, classic, Hellenistic and finally Roman overlap and They give life to the great site of Olympia. We asked at the entrance the possibility of a personal guide, the cost was 80 euros, in two it seemed an overcharge so we went through our own means alone. Absolutely necessary to visit the fine to complete the visit, here you will find the decorations of the various monuments and you will have the idea of the majesty and grandeur that they could have in antiquity.

  • If you can, you should visit the Site during Spring to avoid the scorching summer sun and huge crowds. Ruins of multiple centuries are still standing and all you have to do is use your imagination to feel as if you were there. Bring water, you won't find any.
  • One of the best! Lots of things to see in a fantastic place and a great museum. Among the antiquities there are lots of trees so there is shadow. Have water with you
  • We actually toured the birthplace of the ancient Olympics, including the place where the torch is lit for the modern Olympics. This is a fabulous place. Walking the site thrilled as much as visiting any sacred ground can. It is work worth the trip.
  • A historic location. Interesting to learn all about the birthplace of the Olympic Games. If you visit in the spring you'll be treated to the most beautiful wildflowers as a bonus!
  • Superb robust archeological site. You can imagine how the original Olympic games took place. A wide variety of structural elements and artifacts. Absolutely a must see!
