Sunset in Oia, Oia

#1 of 1,110 in Things to do in Cyclades
Thousands of visitors come to Santorini just to experience the famed Sunset in Oia, one of the island's major attractions. A small town precariously perched on the crescent-shaped volcanic cliffs of the island, Oia has been a popular sunset-watching spot for centuries. A major stop for cruise ships touring the Aegean, the town gets quite crowded by mid-afternoon. It's best to arrive early in the day, leaving plenty of time to explore the town's narrow streets and find the best place for watching or photographing the setting sun. The western side of the town offers the finest views and attracts the majority of visitors, so claim your spot as early as you can. • Sunset is sunset but in Oia the atmosphere is special and the village is beautiful. That said I suggest you enjoy it from the private terrace of your hotel or from a restaurant (like PELEKANOS) becaus...  more »
  • Magnificent, wonderful, exciting ... This alone is worth a trip to Santorini! If you can see it from the ruins of the Castle but beware!! Go there at least an hour before X, find the best places!

  • This was one of the best experiences of my life! We payed a little more to have a semi-private boat and it was totally worth it. The Ipanema 58' 5hr sunset cruise was absolutely amazing! The boat crew were cheerful, helpful, and not overwhelming at all. Food was spectacular!! Everything was perfect! We had our almost 2-year old on the boat as well, and it was very doable. Worth every penny, HIGHLY recommend this company!!
  • I'll start off by saying that my initial interaction with this company was terrible, my friends and I booked the most expensive 14 person yacht for 165€ ea and we're picked up and taken to a different 24 person yacht at a different port. We found out immediately when we arrived and complained to Marina who worked there, she was extremely patronizing and unhelpful. She said it wasn't their problem and we had to talk to the agent we booked through. I explained that they need to do this as they choose to have a partnership with this person and need to take responsibility, at this point I explained we should get a discount for this. In the end after waiting an hour for her to look into it she said we couldn't get a discount and said that if we don't want to go on the 24 person yacht then we would have to by our money back from the agent and book another day, I already told her we couldn't as were leaving the next day. In addition to this they picked us up from our hotel at 1pm and left us waiting until 3pm to board. I'm not sure why they couldn't pick us up later, we would've gone their ourselves to avoid waiting 1.5hrs. Honestly, this was made so much worse by Marina's attitude. She was really rude, unapologetic and unhelpful, she she spoke patronizing slow and repeatedly interrupted us when we were trying to explain our issue. I'm not sure how such a highly rated company can have someone like this managing customer service. She needs to be fired or at least relegated to cleaning the bathrooms. As for the boat, it was nice and all the staff on board were great. It's a shame the company (Marina) didn't care about their clients.
  • I went to multiple boat tour companies in Santorini, and kept ending up at this one. They were so friendly from the beginning, and the experience was unforgettable. The fleet is very well maintained, and the food was outstanding.
  • Did the 5hr morning cruise. We also opted for the slightly more expensive simi private smaller boat, maybe 20 people. I would recommend doing that. The boat was perfect and we had a lounge bed to ourselves. Everyone had room and great tour. Staff was amazing also.
  • Awesome crew on the boat. Great communications when booking. Overall an excellent experience.

Where to stay in Oia

Oia boasts arguably the most unusual lodgings in the Cyclades, offering rooms in cave-like houses carved into Santorini's dramatic cliff faces. Converted into boutique hotels, these dwellings provide airy rooms with good natural ventilation, allowing them to remain cool throughout the island's hot summers. The western side of Oia offers the best sunset views, but you must book months in advance to stay there. The less crowded eastern side offers comfortable lodgings in reasonably priced apartments with private balconies and free Wi-Fi.
