Portara, Naxos Town

(4.7/5 based on 1,100+ reviews on the web)
All that's left of a temple to Apollo, Portara forms a dramatic frame of ancient colonnades against the sky and has become an icon of the town. Located on the island of Palatia, the attraction represents the remains of the cultural and trade center of ancient Naxos. The rest of the temple was used to construct a castle in the city center by the Venetians. To visit Portara on your trip to Naxos, use our Naxos vacation route planner.

  • This giant doorway is the only remaining segment of a temple to Apollo begun in 530BC. It was never completed. Views from here are spectacular.
  • A beautiful landscape with nice story worth visiting. You mean and the view and the photos you will get from the point

  • The best part of Naxos island. The remains of a huge gate named "Portara" (big door) by the locals. It offers one of the best sunsets in Greece. Do not miss. Do not forget your camera either. Highly recommended.
  • You will not have a sunset better in Naxos to which you can do from here. Visit bound and main attraction of the island. Not being here is not to come to Naxos.
