Portara, Naxos Town

Categories: Ruins, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4.7/5 based on 1,000+ reviews on the web
All that's left of a temple to Apollo, Portara forms a dramatic frame of ancient colonnades against the sky and has become an icon of the town. Located on the island of Palatia, the attraction represents the remains of the cultural and trade center of ancient Naxos. The rest of the temple was used to construct a castle in the city center by the Venetians. To visit Portara on your trip to Naxos, use our Naxos vacation route planner.

  • When you get to Naxos the first thing you see is the portara of Apollo. A visit to this place is mandatory to you see them all over town of Chora and its port. Preferred over the visit to the sunset.

  • A short stroll from town - offers a panoramic view of the town and out to sea. Nice place to take pictures.
  • Don't miss the sunset from this site, located in the harbour of Chora of Naxos. Check the time of sunset and go to Take a half hour before, so as to enjoy the spectacle of the dying sun. Of course the months of July and August are perhaps not the ideal to see the phenomenon in solitude. Though it's always worth taking a slight climb up to up there before maybe a stroll along the alleys of the Old Market or visiting the many excellent taverns of the island's capital. Recommended

  • The best part of Naxos island. The remains of a huge gate named "Portara" (big door) by the locals. It offers one of the best sunsets in Greece. Do not miss. Do not forget your camera either. Highly recommended.
  • not to be missed at sunset an amazing feeling seeing the sun setting enter the portal of the ancient temple of Apollo a flaw that you would like to be just to enjoy the moment but instead there is always too many people delighted to see the magical sunset
