The Archaeological Museum of Delos is a museum on the island of Delos, near Mykonos in the South Aegean, Greece. It is noted for its extensive collection of statues unearthed in the surrounding area of the ancient site, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Although the museum has a considerable collection, it does not contain all of the items found in Delos: a large quantity are on display in Athens at the National Archaeological Museum.HistoryIn 1872, the French School at Athens began excavating on Delos, in a project on a massive scale, which is still ongoing today. As the collection accumulated, the museum was built on-site in 1904 by the Archaeological Society of Athens to accommodate the archaeological discoveries. Its original five rooms went underwent expansion in 1931 and then again in 1972 to nine rooms.

  • I go there every year to sponsor since the entrance fee is only two euros. I'd recommend the municipality to upgrade to (at least) five euro for tourists who otherwise it is the end of the archaeological zone in front of the main church which is closed since the Lady in charge has retired. However there are some more or less interesting themed rooms. cycladic figurines are always my favorites: ancient and modern Assembly. not to be missed.

  • The displays have very little information. There are some amazing items but without proper labeling it is difficult to appreciate. There are some electronic displays but since they were off I have no ...  more »
  • The welcome is friendly, the staff is present and is not stingy with information about the Museum and the history of the island. The pieces are beautiful and well preserved, it is a supplement very interesting to visit the Archaeological Museum of Athens, for those who have had the chance to visit.

Where to stay in Naxos

As with most island destinations, rooms in Naxos tend to cost more the closer you get to the sea. Beach hotels and seaside apartments come at a steep price, but they offer spacious rooms and modern amenities just minutes from the island's finest beaches. Stay in Naxos Town for quick access to the best shopping and dining options, or choose one of the island's smaller settlements if you prefer a quieter base. Village inns provide simply furnished rooms and no frills, but they also charge less than the resort hotels.
