Fortress Palamidi, Nafplio

4.7
Must see · Castle · Tourist Spot
Built by the Venetians as a means of defending the city, Fortress Palamidi presides over Nafplio from above. The Venetians built the fortress between 1711 and 1714, during their second occupation of the area. The fortress proved unsuccessful at protecting against invasion, however, and was taken over by the Turks in 1715 and then the Greeks in 1822. You can climb more than 900 steps from the town to the top of the fortress. At 216 m (709 ft) above town, the view of Nafplio and the gulf is your reward. Use the brochure provided at the entrance as your map for a self-guided tour. • The castle has a great view overlooking Nafplio valley and the coast line. It is very well preserved and you can still see clearly the signs of the Venetian architecture .  more »

  • That was a fair old climb, 999 steps! But my good the view is worth it.
  • An impressive medieval fortress towering above the Nafplio. You have to climb some thousand steps to get to the top. Stunning views of Naflpio and sea are nice reward for the effort.
  • Not bad, not great
  • Amazing place. Great views, plenty to see. BUT 7 cars, including ours were broken into so be extra careful. Not the first time it has happened.
  • Impressive, if along with the walk, you have studied the Greek history and the purpose and use of this castle.
