Built by the Venetians as a means of defending the city, Fortress Palamidi presides over Nafplio from above. The Venetians built the fortress between 1711 and 1714, during their second occupation of the area. The fortress proved unsuccessful at protecting against invasion, however, and was taken over by the Turks in 1715 and then the Greeks in 1822. You can climb more than 900 steps from the town to the top of the fortress. At 216 m (709 ft) above town, the view of Nafplio and the gulf is your reward. Fortress Palamidi Reviews
Υπάρχουν δύο είσοδοι η πιο γνωστή που ανεβαίνεις 999 σκαλιά και η άλλη που πηγαίνεις με το αμάξι και παρκάρεις έξω από την είσοδο! Το αντίτιμο είναι χαμηλό (ολόκληρο 8/μειωμένο 4€) και αξίζει μια βόλτ... more »There are two entrances the most famous you climb 999 stairs and the other one you drive and park outside the entrance! The price is low (whole 8/reduced €4) and worth a stroll in the historic castle and lots of photos with the great view!!
Ωστόσο βρήκαμε το εισιτήριο λίγο τσιμπημένο (8... more »Beautiful place, historic, with amazing view! Very nicely lit at night! Because it was too hot, we preferred to ride. However we found the ticket a bit pinched (8 euros per person) as a large part of the castle was closed due to maintenance...
Getting up to Palamidi Castle from Naflpio, through the 999 steps, is a unique experience. There is always the way to drive up there if the walking is too much. The views are great, place is kept nice... more »
One of the most beautiful and monumental fortress I've ever seen. It's worth the thousand steps. Breathtaking view from above. See the city, the sea, the surrounding mountains. It is worth taking a lot of drinking water in the summer because the heat is very high. Beautiful place.
One of the most beautiful monuments I have been with great architecture inside and olive tree environment. Wonderful view from the highest point and very interesting place especially for kids. This is also a place where Greeks put the Kolokotroni in the prison so you can visit and get in to the hole where he was placed.
We were in for some exercise tonight exploring the Palamidi Fortress. The views were so amazing that I just couldn't stop taking pictures! I would suggest driving to the top as once you get in there's plenty of walking to do. This was my 11 year old's favorite stop so far because there were plenty of little caves and prison cells to explore. The Venetian fortress is in good condition for being over 300 years old. It was interesting to imagine defending each of the self contained bastions Palamidi (Greek: Παλαμήδι)
Another great visit to this beautiful site. The views from the fortress are spectacular and the structure is really interesting. We would have enjoyed more information about the history of the place. Opens at 8am, and it gets really hot. So get there early!
Best day trip ever! The castle is incredibly huge and you're almost allowed to go everywhere. Also they have a very cute dog there that's walking around with the tourists. Loved it!
