Take a trip back to the Bronze Age at Ancient Mycenae, one of the world's most significant archaeological sites. Featured on the World Heritage List, the site was once a major military stronghold. The ruins stand on a rugged hill 90 km (55 mi) southwest of Athens. At its peak in the 14th century BCE, the fortress and the surrounding town housed a population of more than 30,000. To see the remains of the palace complex and the famous beehive tombs, purchase a ticket at the main entrance, known as the Lion Gate. The path to the main gate is steep, so wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water. Arrange to visit Ancient Mycenae and other attractions in Mycenae using our Mycenae family vacation planner.

Admission is free for children and students and includes €12, the tholos tomb of Agamemnon, who can be reached on foot from the Acropolis of Mycenae, about 500 metres downhill from the parking lot. The Acropolis is well preserved, you can admire the lion gate and the panorama on the Argolis. The path is uphill and there are several ruins of tombs and palaces.

A Micene si torna ogni volta con tanta emozione, ripensando ai miti degli Atridi e alla storia della scoperta di questo luogo. La cittadella micenea, protetta da un alto monte e rivolta verso il mare,... more »In Mycenae you back each time with so much emotion, thinking again about the myths of the Mythology and history of the discovery of this place. The Mycenaean Citadel, protected by a high mountain and faces the sea, is a magical place. The lion gate is something amazing: the mighty architectural structure with a lintel giant joins the elegance of two lions, which draw almost a heraldic crest. Belle the monumental tombs adjacent to walls, nice walk along the walls and up to the top of the Hill, where was the Mycenaean Megaron. The wind makes it more pleasant visit, which comes complete with a splendid archaeological museum.

We were going with a guide, so understood very well the importance of this city. It has a small museum which is included with the entrance, which I recommend to visit. We were in July, so it was very hot. Where the parking, there are a few stalls to buy bottles of chilled water. It's awesome to go up the ramp and through the door of the Lions is a highly recommended visit, better if take who explain it to you to appreciate what you see

As a lover of Greek culture and history, this place touches the soul. Loved walking in the steps of the ancients and visiting the museum. Very inspiring. May be a little bit of a drive as there is not much near the town of Mycenae, but definitely worth the visit if you have the time.

Greek for lovers. Upon a good bicycle tour we hit that place. We cannot always bike. So we made something good in terms of culture. We enjoyed the good Local food and drinks. Nice environment. Recommended for real Greek lovers. Worse to go!

It didn't look much and considering the number of tour buses, the blazing hot sun, the uphill slog and the 12 euro entry we decided it was enough to view from the car park. I would say only for true lovers of ancient greek ruins. To be honest it looked like 90% rubble.

Absolutely incredible prehistoric site. The walls, the views, walking through the Lion's gate, and the tombs. Make sure you come here on a trip to the area. I came here on a day trip and I loved it.

Overpriced and crowded with tourists. A peek into the ancient history of a great civilization is now priced EUR 12 and you get to see the ruins. And there are thousands of tourists with you looking at the ruins and wondering what are they doing there under the blazing sun and 40 degrees heat. Tourist trap built by the government.
