Ancient Mycenae, Mycenae

4.5
#1 of 8 in Things to do in Mycenae
Take a trip back to the Bronze Age at Ancient Mycenae, one of the world's most significant archaeological sites. Featured on the World Heritage List, the site was once a major military stronghold. The ruins stand on a rugged hill 90 km (55 mi) southwest of Athens. At its peak in the 14th century BCE, the fortress and the surrounding town housed a population of more than 30,000. To see the remains of the palace complex and the famous beehive tombs, purchase a ticket at the main entrance, known as the Lion Gate. The path to the main gate is steep, so wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water. Ancient Mycenae is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Mycenae Edition.

  • We visited the archaeological site with a tour purchased in Athens the day before. Admission is free for children and students and includes €12, the tholos tomb of Agamemnon, who can be reached on foot from the Acropolis of Mycenae, about 500 metres downhill from the parking lot. The Acropolis is well preserved, you can admire the lion gate and the panorama on the Argolis. The path is uphill and there are several ruins of tombs and palaces.

  • In Mycenae you back each time with so much emotion, thinking again about the myths of the Mythology and history of the discovery of this place. The Mycenaean Citadel, protected by a high mountain and faces the sea, is a magical place. The lion gate is something amazing: the mighty architectural structure with a lintel giant joins the elegance of two lions, which draw almost a heraldic crest. Belle the monumental tombs adjacent to walls, nice walk along the walls and up to the top of the Hill, where was the Mycenaean Megaron. The wind makes it more pleasant visit, which comes complete with a splendid archaeological museum.

  • It is a place of incredible, that we back very to following in the history. We were going with a guide, so understood very well the importance of this city. It has a small museum which is included with the entrance, which I recommend to visit. We were in July, so it was very hot. Where the parking, there are a few stalls to buy bottles of chilled water. It's awesome to go up the ramp and through the door of the Lions is a highly recommended visit, better if take who explain it to you to appreciate what you see

  • Considering that it is a hilltop fortress, it is surprisingly easy to navigate. A wheelchair would manage most of the route, and my blind wife had no problems. This is a must-see on a trip to the Peloponnese.
  • Very interesting archeological site. Three amazing tombs, famous entrance with the lions, ruins of the palace, round shape praying place, all with great architecture. This place was the background for Homers to write about the Greek Mythology. A path for wheelchairs along the whole site. Better to walk with shoes and hat. It is advices to see the museum first - going straight and left from the entrance. It takes about 2 hour to cover the whole site, bring water with you. Half price for students.
  • As a lover of Greek culture and history, this place touches the soul. Loved walking in the steps of the ancients and visiting the museum. Very inspiring. May be a little bit of a drive as there is not much near the town of Mycenae, but definitely worth the visit if you have the time.
  • It's really nice ancient city, had so much power, but only rocks and holes are left (except of Lions gate). Beside that, the view on the surrounding is breathtaking!
  • Incredible place where u can walk on the stones of a very ancient and famous town. Landscape is wonderful.
