Milatos Cave, Milatos

#7 of 18 in Nature in Lasithi Prefecture
Explore Milatos Cave, best known as the center of an 1823 battle between the brave local rebels of Milatos and the invading Turkish army, which ended tragically. You'll need a flashlight to explore the pitch-black caves, and many recommended taking transport to the site as the walk from the village is quite long. Within the cave, look for a small church built in 1935: it sits near a large circular opening revealing some spectacular views of the surrounding area, so bring along a camera! For travelers who use our online itinerary creator, Milatos holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Milatos Cave and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Visited this cave again. Beware with your head! The road takes about 5 minutes on foot. This is not to do with pushchair or wheelchair. The fence towards Abyss is bad. In the mountains you saw and heard he everywhere walking mountain goats. View is also beautiful! In the cave a small altar with some bones of the people who are slaughtered here. You can deep the cave in however it is Stik dark. Your phone's light is not enough. Please also bring a good flashlight. This time no bats seen but they are there.

  • From Milatos village, the way up, follow the signs until you see a plate "Milatos Cave". Park you car along the road since there is no parking area. Follow the stairs up and discocer the darkness of t...  more »
  • A walk on a winding but feasible path, takes you to these caves carved into the mountain, with a small church inside them. To explore them better, arm yourself with stack!

  • There is a small chapel inside with an altar where you can light candles. The view is nice, but don't expect to be blown away with amazement. It's a good visit for when you're in the area or passing trough, but I wouldn't recommend traveling more than 20 minutes just for this. And don't forget to bring a flashlight! (Phone is fine too)
  • Nice small cave, nothing special but fun to have a look. Bonus: there's a small church in it. PS. bring a flashlight (or similar), the entrance is quite dark.
  • Amazing Cave. You Can go inside it, very calm place. Great view for some Photos. When you see a huge stone with Milatos Cave name, go to the right, to the hill.
  • You need good walking shoes, not a place for young children, if you have problems walking don't go unsuitable for pushchair. And would be much better if you take a torch as there is no lighting past the church as the entrance, can can use your phone but don't expect to see much. It's free to see
  • Nice and quite, little outside of the major touristic areas. Therefore, I personally liked it. Cave itself is relatively small. Just a nice trip to show your kids and to do something else then hang out on the beach...
