The Methana volcano peninsula is situated approximately 50km southwest of Athens in Greece.Geological historyThe Methana (Μέθανα) peninsula contains some 32 volcanoes, including the Methana volcano, that are mostly andesitic and dacitic lava domes. The volcanic activity in the peninsula began 1 million years ago and continued sporadically until 300 years ago. The last eruptions took place in 1700 at a submarine volcano north of Kameni Chora. On land there is also the historic lava dome of Kameni Chora that erupted in 230 BC.In August 1922 there were numerous reports of an possible eruption in the Kaimeno Vouno crater, however this still remains unconfirmed. Methana is in the northwestern part of the group of Cycladic volcanoes that are considered active (Milos, Santorini and Nisyros). The rocks are mostly dacites and andesites. On Methana there are thermal springs and mofettes (gas exhalations). Methana is cut by many tectonic faults, and so it is an area in high danger of earthquakes. The major fault cuts the town of Methana from west to east.

  • At the beginning of the Scorched Country, on a balcony built of volcanic stone, surrounded by greenery and flowers, with tables and benches from pine trunks of the adjacent forest, rich in waiting the unassuming Tavern with a rich selection of appetizers and good wine. Good prices, excellent service, good humour and courtesy imaginary landscape you give generously the tranquillity that we so badly need. In reception the Marigo , a large dog with young child's heart steals the show ... It is worth to go ...

  • For active people and not suitable for children under 8 since the path has some dangerous spots. Overall completed in an hour and gives an extremely rare view of the Saronikos gulf.
  • If you have to be Natural, be sure to visit the volcano. It's not scary. By car ogibaete left part of "Islands". In my understanding of methane-island. And serpentine kilometre upstairs. Continue on foot along a very narrow path. Everywhere there are pointers. Do not get lost. Take your camera. Very unusual landscapes. Take the time to reach the end. Then climb on a large stone on top. See the Grotto. Uniform normal. Sneakers is desirable.
