  • Ancient Messina is not as well known to tourists, such as Sparta or ancient Olympia. Even odd that this object is not included in the UNESCO list. But I think it will be done, because the object is opened for visits by tourists just a few years. The scale and importance of this ancient city in the history of Greece. In the archaeological zone (admission € 6) you can visit: Asklepion (in our understanding of a sanatorium complex), surrounded by a double gallery, theatre and Vulevtirion (Parliament), which is the meeting place of the meeting; the remains of the sanctuary of Demeter and the sanctuary of ARTEMIS, Orfii of Castor and Pollux, the Temple of ARTEMIS, etc.. It was a huge city, capital of ancient Messina, who like all the scattered ancient Greek States fought, poraboshhalsja, was released and lived its ordinary urban life. In the 8th and 7th centuries BC, Messenia was conquered by the Spartans as a result of the two wars Messenskih. From the capital, left no stone unturned, and those who were not able to leave their native land, the Spartans turned the helot (something between serfs and slaves). According to the legend, messencev was a mascot, if he died, it would have disappeared forever Messenia. talisman was buried in the mountains a secluded place Itomy, which was the ancient city of Messina, the capital of Messinia. Despite the long years of occupation of their land and after constant wars and removals messency regained their independence. At the foot of the Itomy in 369 BC, Epaminondas founded a new city (still found was probably an ancient talisman).

  • One of the most complete and interesting antiquities site you could visit. Sadly overlooked by many due to its relatively isolated location. Definitely in my top 5 list for Greece.
  • Stunning site everything in one place, ruins, theatre. Temples. gymnasium. Fountains. Running water. Amphitheatre. Greek and later Roman. museum. See also nearby arcades gate
  • A well preserved site with a small museum. Worth a visit if you're in the Kalamata area. There were no crowds when we were there.
  • A breathtaking site, very well preserved and not crowdy. Museum is rather small but nice.
  • Absolutely worth a visit
