Acropolis of Lindos, Lindos

4.4
Perched atop a rocky hill, Acropolis of Lindos represents natural citadel fortified over the centuries by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and the Ottomans. Offering sweeping views of a small town's picturesque harbor, this important archaeological site contains remains of several ancient structures, the most notable of which is a Doric temple dedicated to the goddess Athena and dated to about 300 BCE. A monumental medieval wall surrounds this age-old temple and fortifications built by the Crusaders in the 14th century. The climb up to these ancient ruins can be quite arduous; you can make it a bit easier by arranging for a donkey ride up to the top. • I think after the Acropolis of Lindos is a must for any visitor to Rhodes: A landscape of outstanding natural beauty (turquoise waters, fine sand under the Akropolois) and an ancient Acropolis with divine radiance. You can upload with a donkey to the Acropolis and down ride also. Upload and down walk/ride through beautiful narrow streets to get, see homes and businesses in typical Greek style (white facade, red-purple Hibiscus flowers). The shops such as clothing in the typical Greek look (white linen dresses), hand-crafted jewelry, ceramics, souvenirs. On the Acropolis, you can enjoy a spectacular view over the houses in typical Greek style (wealthy) and the turquoise waters. You can let yourself be enchanted by the divine radiance and look at the ancient excavations at the top (for admission). You can independently walk down to the beach, which although small is, but I also one of the most beautiful beaches (turquoise-blue waters, fine sand beach, very good taverns). Somewhat higher situated there are also everywhere especially beautiful and noble taverns. Conclusion: The Acropolis of Lindos is a highlight!

  • To gain access a long uphill road and buy a ticket which costs 12 euro. But it's worth it. What you see from there on is extraordinary. A nature that takes your breath away, framed in the ruins of the Acropolis.

  • The effort to get to the top will be rewarded by the archaeological heritage of the site and the view over the Bay and the village of white houses. You can climb even by mule.

  • I have been three times, always worth a visit because it is historically interesting and highly photogenic (if you can avoid the cranes and builders!). One downside is that Greek Health and Safety means keeping a close rein on small children - or drunk adults. You can go up by donkey past the women selling embroidery laid out on the rocks, and walk down back to the village. It's a pleasant way to spend an hour or two in Lindos, well worth a visit.
  • I would first like to talk about some of the negatives people have listed: - The walk up the hill takes 7-10 minutes if you're in good shape. If you're not in good shape, it might take 30 minutes, but not much longer. Grab a water at one of the shops in town and you'll be just fine. Please do not use the donkeys unless you have an injury or are disabled. You can read more about why elsewhere online. - Some people find it overpriced because you don't have a guide to explain the ruins. There are detailed signs EVERYWHERE with information about the ruins in both English and Greek. I barely saw anyone but myself and some German tourists reading them. I believe you can also download something to listen to or read about it and I'm sure you can find a guide in the town. For me, this was an absolutely spectacular experience. I was considering not paying the entry fee (12€) while on the bus to Lindos, but as soon as I saw it from the road I knew that I had to go up there. The views from the acropolis are amazing, it has a huge historical significance, and can be very educational if you choose to read the signs.
  • Worthwhile a trek up the hill, just for the views. The ruins themselves are aren’t well explained, and the heat was intense (didn’t help we went around midday...) would be great spot to watch the sun set
  • Looks stunning, especially when lit up of an evening and your eating dinner or lunch in the rooftop restaurants. Never tire of Lindos. Love it, been there 4 times.
  • Really liked the acropolis, lots of information about the different ruins there. Beautiful views from the top. Nice walk up to it as it's just a street of shops, so it's also kept cool by their air conditioning, and the shade they provide. Don't like the donkeys that are being used to carry people up and down the paths. Some of the donkeys looked very boney, and noticed someone who was large in height and size was riding one. If they insist on these donkeys being ridden, it should just be small children.
