Acropolis of Lindos, Lindos

(5,000+ reviews on the web)
Ruin
Perched atop a rocky hill, Acropolis of Lindos represents natural citadel fortified over the centuries by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and the Ottomans. Offering sweeping views of a small town's picturesque harbor, this important archaeological site contains remains of several ancient structures, the most notable of which is a Doric temple dedicated to the goddess Athena and dated to about 300 BCE. A monumental medieval wall surrounds this age-old temple and fortifications built by the Crusaders in the 14th century. The climb up to these ancient ruins can be quite arduous; you can make it a bit easier by arranging for a donkey ride up to the top. • We have visited Lindos during an off-season time. The place was peaceful and calm, I suppose we were lucky to have this historical place by ourselves. I loved the walk around the Acropolis and enjoyed...  more »

  • Very impressive well preserved and restored. A short hike up from Lindos village this vast and panoramic acropolis has a very impressive history. The restoration work is very authentic and helps depict what was once there. The view of the sea and the village is superb. Not suitable for young children or strollers. The hike up the mansion is quite steep with many steps and throughout the site there are many ledges with no rail. Entrance fee is €12 (as of October 2016).
  • The view from there is great.you can guide yourself easy with the help of the templates you will find in front of the ruins .the entrance in the winter is 6€ and it is open from 8:00 to 14:40.
  • During the Italian occupation of the island (1912–1945) major restoration work was carried out on the Lindos acropolis, but it was poorly done and was harmful to the historic record. The north-east side of the Temple of Athena was restored. The monumental staircase to the propylaea was rebuilt and many of the columns of the Hellenistic stoa were re-erected. Large surfaces were covered with concrete. Bases and inscribed blocks were taken from their locations and placed along the restored walls. (WikiWand)
  • Interesting place. You need much time to visit it, because there are a lot of written information
  • Very impressive structure. Has the most beautiful view from up there of all the area. Climbing up to the top is not as hard as you might think. I recommend going up by foot, although there is a possibility of going up on a donkey.
