Acropolis of Lindos, Lindos

4.4
Perched atop a rocky hill, Acropolis of Lindos represents natural citadel fortified over the centuries by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and the Ottomans. Offering sweeping views of a small town's picturesque harbor, this important archaeological site contains remains of several ancient structures, the most notable of which is a Doric temple dedicated to the goddess Athena and dated to about 300 BCE. A monumental medieval wall surrounds this age-old temple and fortifications built by the Crusaders in the 14th century. The climb up to these ancient ruins can be quite arduous; you can make it a bit easier by arranging for a donkey ride up to the top. • It takes a while to get to the top but it's worth it. The Acropolis of Lindos is considered one of the finest for maintenance. From there you can admire a beautiful view. For the more lazy there's always the donkey that can accompany

  • Not worth the walk. Very disappointing as not much information provided and just an excuse for locals to make money from using poor donkeys as taxis for tourists. Most interesting thing around here wa...  more »
  • For 12 euro per person already an enormous price, still is worth the view! One should highly aufjedenfall not directly in the morning, when all Touribusse arrive, walk up, but just relax on the beach and then at noon on the Acropolis. It is then much hotter, but it's worth, because it of almost alone up and can alone look at everything and take pictures.

  • The town of lindos is a lovely place and it was a perfect end to the day to come up here. Not that we had the choice to come earlier lol. it was way to hot to make the trek. we would have melted. the walk up to it is a bit steep but you get some amazing views. if the walk seems a bit too much for you they have donkeys people can ride up with. once you reach the temple you could spend hours there. we stayed for as long as we could once we were there. beautiful.
  • A great restoration/conservation effort. Only problem was not much access to guides - plenty of information points but would have appreciated a guide, even if it cost a little extra. In peak summer they probably offer this though. Well worth a visit either way.
  • I have been three times, always worth a visit because it is historically interesting and highly photogenic (if you can avoid the cranes and builders!). One downside is that Greek Health and Safety means keeping a close rein on small children - or drunk adults. You can go up by donkey past the women selling embroidery laid out on the rocks, and walk down back to the village. It's a pleasant way to spend an hour or two in Lindos, well worth a visit.
  • Sitting atop a hill overlooking Lindos this monument to Greek history is a must when visiting the island. Getting there is an adventure in itself as the village is located down a steep road from the main highway, you then have to climb a rugged and steep pathway to the avropolis itself. Recommend sturdy footwear. You can pay to get there by donkey to entrance, But this appeared just as perilous. The site is large and steeped in history, however at busy times is crowded. Advise to avoid heat of the noon sun, hats sunscreen and water a must.
  • Fantastic place to visit, just a shame we only had a few hours there, could have stayed there for the whole day and evening. Take note though, comfortable walking footwear is advised.
