Acropolis of Lindos, Lindos

4.4
Perched atop a rocky hill, Acropolis of Lindos represents natural citadel fortified over the centuries by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and the Ottomans. Offering sweeping views of a small town's picturesque harbor, this important archaeological site contains remains of several ancient structures, the most notable of which is a Doric temple dedicated to the goddess Athena and dated to about 300 BCE. A monumental medieval wall surrounds this age-old temple and fortifications built by the Crusaders in the 14th century. The climb up to these ancient ruins can be quite arduous; you can make it a bit easier by arranging for a donkey ride up to the top. • as I have already indicated, the Acropolis is closed the week. We climbed to the top for nothing... Apart from the view. And we went down bare foot because the floor made of tiles is very slippery. Anyone having problems walking refrain

  • We went with a guide who supplied audio headsets and explained the history well. Was mid 20s and off season, would not have been good if much hotter as many steps to the top.  more »
  • Great views, very nice place nice: not everywhere signs or Hibweise, despite steep precipices.

  • Amazing place. Well worth the walk up to the top (please don't ride a donkey as too jot for them). €12 to enter but money well spent. The views are fantastic and there are lots of information posts on the restoration work being done and how it must have looked. Simply mind blowing. Walked down to beach but way too crowded. Spent the rest of my time and money at all the little shops in the village below and found some lovely souvenirs. Could easily go again.
  • Simply stunning! The highlight of my trip to Greece, I was absolutely mind blown by the beauty and history this place had to offer. Once you reach the top you are surrounded by postcard worthy dynamic panoramic 360 views of Lindos town, the Mediterranean Sea, Lindos beach and St. Paul’s bay. This is a must visit!
  • Fantastic historical day out, but an extremely popular tourist destination. For the quietest experience an early to mid afternoon time of arrival will avoid some hustle and bustle. It's not a difficult walk to the top from the town below for the reasonably fit. There are two ways up either by some interesting narrow steps or a longer shallow path made of largish cobbles.
  • A surprisingly large Acropolis high on the cliff. A €12 entrance fee was surprisingly high too. There has been a good deal of repair and reconstruction so parts look really good. Notable the Temple of Athena Lyndia. The whole place must have been spectacular in its past glory. The info boards are also informative and bilingual with English. Views across the Med and the village are good. Some good photo opportunities.
  • Acropolis with a stunning view. Though there is some information available there, I would recommend you read a few facts about the place before you go. Advise: it can get warm on site, so bring water. And wear shoes, not sandals, due to donkeys.
