Preveli Beach, Lefkogia

3.7
#1 of 62 in Outdoors in Rethymnon Prefecture
Find Preveli Beach, hidden away just below a historic monastery where the lagoon and beach are known locally as "Palm Beach." A grove of palm trees crowds the opening of the Kourtaliótiko gorge that opens onto the sand. Boats from Plakias will bring you from your resort to the site, where you can swim in the Libyan Sea and hike the grove in this relatively isolated location. Although the beach is secluded, there is a small cafe nearby. Consider including a visit to the monastery and a hike through the gorge while you're here. With our international travel planner, Lefkogia attractions like Preveli Beach can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • Well, be still brave enough to go there! After that all the evil that we give ourselves to achieve is worth it? Yes anyway but be careful at the back, very difficult! Especially with young children! The Palm Grove is beautiful, the water is cold, but it's a really beautiful setting

  • The River provides lush vegetation on the beach. So may be you under palm trees and relaxed bathing in the river. Also at West wind, it's OK!

  • The path to get there is frankly hard, families with small children to abstain! The water is nice and pleasant, the beach is not very large, the Palm Grove is pretty. Possibility of eating and drinking. There are much better in Crete.

  • Lovely beach but a tourist trap so expect company during peak season. The palm walk is great and takes you away from the beach to fresh water oasis escape. You really don't need a paid tour guide or anything to get to the beach. It's well accessed by local buses and easy to navigate but the bus drops you at the top of the cliffs and then you make your way down the steep steps. It is much easier walking up them at the end of the day, trust me. The walk down is the toughest. A must do trip if in Crete.
  • Amazing place to see and visit for anyone coming to Crete. Beautiful palm forest and the river in between. Super view from mountain top (and park the car). If you want to take it easy, instead of driving to the beach and taking 10 min mountain hike, you can drive to Plakias and take a boat trip directly to the beach.
  • Fantastic spot. Think it will be even better off-season to give you the feeling of discovering a new island. Take some good walking shoes for the descent and climb. No flipflops. You'll see some fishes while snorkeling. When it's not too crowded you'll have nice places to rest in the shadow of trees while having a cool seabreeze. Can swim in both the River and sea.
  • Very busy but the river lake and gorge pools behind the beach are fantastic for swimming. Path to them on left through taverna. Very steep and long descent / ascent, 445 steps and inclines. Can get to the beach by water taxi from Plakias for 8 Euros return.
  • Even though the beach is not organised and not considered to be good beach compared to other beaches in Crete. Yes it's busy with tourists at summer, yes it's not sandy 100%, yes access is not easy but I would definitely recommend it as simply the combination of a running river to the beach is majestic. A fresh water river runs to the beach in a tranquil palm scenery that you could only see in other exotic countries. There is an easy way to visit and avoid the cliff stairs which are tiring for most. You go to Plakias and take one of the water taxi boats that have several trips to Preveli beach. Alternatively you can take a dirt road to Ammoudi beach and take a walking trail for 5 minutes to the beach. If you prefer to enjoy the magnificent views of the beach high above the cliffs then be prepared to walk down the cliff and climb back the steep carved steps for a good 15 minutes. Parking cost is €2 per family car.
