Lassithi Plateau, Lasithi Prefecture
(4/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web)
A fertile plateau that produces some of Crete's olive oil, Lassithi Plateau features white-sailed windmills extending above the valleys. Explore the area to find some early versions of these windmills scattered among old ruins of farms and towns. A memorial here commemorates the destruction of many of these villages during the Ottoman and Egyptian attacks of the 19th century. One of the best ways to tour the plateau's sites is by car; rental cars are available throughout the island. • The drive up to the plateau through steep mountains was awe inspiring. En route the visit to the monastery of Kera with its 14th century wall paintings & the lovely icons in the church was fascinating...  more »
  • We went by car to the plateau. Certainly not by itself and attracted us plateau monastery of Kera Kardiotissa convent ("Virgin of the heart") in the District of plateau. The monastery at least 800 years, and here is very famous for the miraculous icon. It is a quiet place that provides peace of mind and a lot of impressions. Which of the monastery overlooks the plateau is a fairy tale! There's a pretty high up in the mountains, the climate is very different: in the heat of the day at the top was fresh and slightly cool, amazing air forced breathe, incredible gave tuned romantic mood. Feel there myself out of time, out of space. Ancient walls gave peace and the surrounding magnificent nature-admiration. Vegetation there, of course, completely different than the rest, the blazing sun scorched part of Crete. We, the residents of Mountain-Lake-steppe edge, even the birthplace as if a breath) to all I advise to go there, we loved it!

  • Very nice place over land and sea in the distance. Great view of one of the highest points of Crete. You will see a Museum and old Cretan mills. Some sculptures on the square in front of the Museum, and if you are lucky that it is not too hot, not too bad, you will have the pleasure of admiring the landscape far, far away.
