Lassithi Plateau, Lasithi Prefecture

(4/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web)
A fertile plateau that produces some of Crete's olive oil, Lassithi Plateau features white-sailed windmills extending above the valleys. Explore the area to find some early versions of these windmills scattered among old ruins of farms and towns. A memorial here commemorates the destruction of many of these villages during the Ottoman and Egyptian attacks of the 19th century. One of the best ways to tour the plateau's sites is by car; rental cars are available throughout the island. • What a fabulous day. Hire a car and drive yourself up here. The views are amazing the roads are so quiet in April and everywhere is covered in spring wild flowers. We also enjoyed driving down through...  more »
  • A staple that is done in a day... of mills everywhere... small traditional villages and a few stops for sites to visit. Everything is accessible with a "normal" car. The 4 x 4 is not necessary as we might have feared it sometimes.

  • Lasithi is a rich and fertile area of Crete. There are no major settlements on the plateau, only small villages which have preserved the original cultural tradition of Cretans. Here is clean, mountain air and mild climate. And yet here is cooked very tasty Lamb on Crete!
