Lassithi Plateau, Lasithi Prefecture

4.0
#1 of 10 in Scenic Drive in Greece
A fertile plateau that produces some of Crete's olive oil, Lassithi Plateau features white-sailed windmills extending above the valleys. Explore the area to find some early versions of these windmills scattered among old ruins of farms and towns. A memorial here commemorates the destruction of many of these villages during the Ottoman and Egyptian attacks of the 19th century. One of the best ways to tour the plateau's sites is by car; rental cars are available throughout the island. Make Lassithi Plateau a centerpiece of your Malia vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Malia driving holiday planning website .

  • A green village, with Sycamore, walnut and chestnut ... with few inhabitants anymore. ... Worth a stop at the Café of the village, next to the faucet for a coffee or a glass of raki!

  • We drove plateau with our rental car a half-day through the Lassithi, with stop at the cave of Zeus. It was really fun and there are wonderful views points. It was good and locals on the side of the road to see who wanted to sell their products and cute waved. I recommend a half or a full day for the ride in the Lassithi plateau to schedule. Dear soltlte man in peace and quiet, enjoy the landscape and kuvenreiche drive. This depends of course of the route you want to go and where you want to start. We had it from our hotel in Gouves not all too far.

Where to stay in Malia

Malia's reputation as a mecca for young tourists, especially those hailing from the UK, means that there is no shortage of accommodation choices in the area--though don't expect much peace and quiet. This party capital of the island of Crete offers a number of beachfront hotels, which is certainly the most popular option here. You have hundreds of hotels to choose from in the area, but to avoid the noisy nightlife you should stay off of Malia's main road leading to the beach, which is crowded with clubs and bars. Alternatives include a variety of rentals along and away from the seaside, as well as the occasional boutique hotel.
