Zakinthos, Laganas

(3.3/5 based on 120+ reviews on the web)
Zakynthos or Zante is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea. It is the third largest of the Ionian Islands. Zakynthos is a separate regional unit of the Ionian Islands region, and its only municipality. It covers an area of 410km2 and its coastline is roughly 123km in length. The name, like all similar names ending in -nthos, is pre-Mycenaean or Pelasgian in origin. In Greek mythology the island was said to be named after Zakynthos, the son of a legendary Arcadian chief Dardanus.Zakynthos is a tourist destination, with an international airport served by many charter flights from northern Europe. The island's nickname is To fioro tou Levante, given by the Venetians.HistoryAncient historyZakynthos was inhabited from the Neolithic Age, as some archaeological excavations have proved. The ancient Greek poet Homer mentioned the island in the Iliad and the Odyssey, stating that the first inhabitants of it were the son of King Dardanos of Troy called Zakynthos and his men. In mythology the island was then conquered by King Arkesios of Kefalonia, and then by Odysseus from Ithaca. Later on, a treaty was signed that made Zakynthos an independent democracy, the first established in Greece, that lasted more than 650 years.

  • My boyfriend and I spent a week in this gorgeous Island, which was also our first experience in Greece. The island is something wonderful, it is true that in Italy we have great places, but Zakynthos is something unique. If you are looking for uma quiet, looking for beautiful sea, excursions, I recommend you do not stay in areas of Laganas, there we dropped in one afternoon and is full of teenagers in prey to hormones. We stayed in Argassi which is very quiet there are several rooms, supermarkets and is very close to the capital. I advise you not to accept the many invitations Street types who sponsor various taverns, restaurants, choose if you want good food and avoid the Italian, is not exactly the best, forget about pizza and croissants. Try to move with Scooter or with a car because the special places are located further north on the island, with a small kia picanto rented there on the spot without a credit card or special requests, we have achieved, with the help of a map and signs (not having the internet on phones) so many special places, even the most extreme point of the entire island and we have enjoyed landscapes and a sea truly heavenly. As for excursions throughout the island there are many spots where you can book, we have opted for a cute ladies Egyptian who has red and black Agency, because its was the best deal, we did the whole boat tour around the island, the whole day, with several pit stops, the longest point was at the beach , the attraction for excellence across Zante, but I assure you that you will be diving in caverns and caves so blue and so beautiful that have nothing to envy to the famous beach. The guide of the Greeks, are a bit daring, but really good and hospitable. :D The island has sandy and rocky beaches, there are many "establishments" in Argassi alittle different from how we know them, anyway you can use sunbeds in peace, but only on condition that you consume there something. We had a great time, and we have enjoyed a really rare beauties, the last advice I would offer is to not venture if you don't know speak a minimum of English there except Hi, thanks and nice Italian lady, do not chew the Italian.

  • Zakynthos is an island rather medium-sized, famous for its beautiful views, where you can enjoy the seasonal Sun and warm water. However, in order to reach the most beautiful places on the island, you have to buy a boat, rent a car or buy a bus tours. On a variety of holiday destinations. We got to Laganas, where there are many discos, night clubs and young people (most often English). Very loud and loud. The capital of the island, Zante, is a modern city, situated on the seafront, with its port, its many restaurants and shops along the shore and side streets, where goes silent and you can find a place for the car. On a hill above the town are the remains of the fortress of the Venetians (medieval period). The lack of remains of ancient Greece. (If you'd like to touch the antiquity of the Islands better to choose a central part of Crete and Rhodes). On the main street extending along the shore there are 2 churches. The larger of these is the Basilica of Agios Dionisios (rather medium-sized and relatively new because from 1948, probably every day). More interesting building is the Church of Agios Nikolaos of the XVI century. (Venetian times), which is located on the large square (closed, so the Interior we visited). Strolling along the promenade along the sea, come across you on the statue of Confucius.

  • We were exploring the island already not the first time from the sea. There are a few places worth to stay. You can meet and dolphins (next) and tortoises (at anchor or in port). The capital has a large port, but there is a lot of tourists so it is loud, and crowded in the evenings. Interesting architecture, a lot of restaurants and cafes, worth a look. Of course, you have to see the Bay of wreckage and the blue caves (you can influence a raft or by swimming to each). On the island you can fly by plane or ferry.
