Ruin Tourist Spot
Explore the ruins of Kos Island's millennia-old Asklepion. In ancient Greece, an asklepion was a sacred healing temple where medicine was systematized and many were taught the art of healing. Of the approximately 300 asclepions, Kos Island's was one of the largest and best known. Explore the remains of this remarkable structure, dating to around 400 BC. See the medical school, temples, and thermal baths. Make sure to visit the highest terrace of the complex for views of much of the island's eastern side. Head to the small on-site museum to learn more about the practice of medicine in ancient Greece. Put Asklepion into our Kos Town vacation generator and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Fantastic part of Greek history. The hospital, or the ruins of it are worth seeing. All to do with Hypocrates. The tour guide, whom I believe was a professor was terrific. He knew all the answers that...  more »

  • An amazing place, well maintained and the information available is informative. When we visited a few weeks ago, the cost of 8€ was very reasonable. It gives you great insight into an era of Greece history.
  • Great place to see first hand how medicene started. Hint: if you don't want to climb more than 100 steps to get to the highest level, which offers a great view and worth the effort, than you can walk a gentle path around that takes you in the same place.
  • A fabulous place to visit as a medical student. We imagined the ages of healing and medicine practiced before the stones became ruins.
  • Great historical site best to go with a local guide to understand the full history of the site
  • Very large histirical area. It triggers your imagination, a glimps of the past.
