Asklepion, Kos

4.1
#1 of 19 in Sightseeing in Kos
Ruin Tourist Spot
Explore the ruins of Kos Island's millennia-old Asklepion. In ancient Greece, an asklepion was a sacred healing temple where medicine was systematized and many were taught the art of healing. Of the approximately 300 asclepions, Kos Island's was one of the largest and best known. Explore the remains of this remarkable structure, dating to around 400 BC. See the medical school, temples, and thermal baths. Make sure to visit the highest terrace of the complex for views of much of the island's eastern side. Head to the small on-site museum to learn more about the practice of medicine in ancient Greece. Put Asklepion into our Kos Town vacation generator and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • The site is very interesting, however for 8 euros per person, explanations signs could have more explanation. Besides these explanations are only in Greek or English. We had a guide with us. The site is easily accessible, drinks machines offer bottles of water for just 35 cents.

  • The entrance fee is expensive for what there is to see (IE not much). The view is beautiful from the heights of the site, but not worth the €8 entry. Fortunately we were in circuit with a guide who we told the healing practices of the old days (before Hippocrates), and how Hippocrates (Kos from) studied the human body and changed things, at the expense of popular beliefs and the priests who officiated in the temple dedicated to healing by Asklepios, son of Apollo, Greek God of medicine. The doctors Caduceus comes from the symbol of Asklepios (stick with a snake that wraps around).

  • It's always great to see historic ruins so we came here knowing that it's going to be old and overgrown in parts. I don't understand why some of the bad reviews reflect this as a negative. They are ru...  more »

  • I like wandering through old ruins but my patience is running a little thin with places that charge a lot and offer little in return. Best thing about this place was the view but you could see better, and we did, by driving along the coast road. 10 euro for 2 would have been too much, the one interesting building was sealed off for good safety reasons and all the information to be had was on 3 or maybe 4 information points which made for very dense and unengaging reading. IMHO these sort of places should include an engaging and informative app as part of the admission price. If you come on a push bike (we didn't) it's a hard ride and really not worth the effort. Toilets were clean.
  • Great place to see first hand how medicine started. Hint: if you don't want to climb more than 100 steps to get to the highest level, which offers a great view and worths the effort, than you can walk a gentle path around that takes you in the same place. The alley is on the left side of the steps.
  • An amazing place, well maintained and the information available is informative. When we visited a few weeks ago, the cost of 8€ was very reasonable. It gives you great insight into an era of Greece history.
  • A fabulous place to visit as a medical student. We imagined the ages of healing and medicine practiced before the stones became ruins.
  • Impressive place. Unfortunately, there are only a few information signs. Entrance fee is 8 €.

Where to stay in Kos Town

Kos Town and its surrounding region offer some of the finest four- and five-star rooms in the Dodecanese. Resort hotels dot the area, providing spacious rooms and access to outdoor pools, fine restaurants, and spa and fitness facilities. All this comes at a price, so if you have a tight budget, consider staying at a family-run guesthouse or good-value hostel. Although they offer smaller rooms and shared restrooms, these establishments keep you close to the sea without costing too much.
