Asklepion, Kos

4.1
Explore the ruins of Kos Island's millennia-old Asklepion. In ancient Greece, an asklepion was a sacred healing temple where medicine was systematized and many were taught the art of healing. Of the approximately 300 asclepions, Kos Island's was one of the largest and best known. Explore the remains of this remarkable structure, dating to around 400 BC. See the medical school, temples, and thermal baths. Make sure to visit the highest terrace of the complex for views of much of the island's eastern side. Head to the small on-site museum to learn more about the practice of medicine in ancient Greece. • If you do without a guide, without prior explanation, what you remember: those are ruins, the price is expensive (I confirm) and you had never seen so many cats in freedom. I forgot the police present on car parks that "hunting" tour operators fraudsters not authorized. With a french-speaking guide (thanks TUI) and audio headsets to hear in a group of 25 people you go into the history of the site. You feel less the a few steps up to visit and the Sun bashing. (allow a CAP and a bottle of water-dispenser on site) I do not have a history lesson on this sanctuary of healing, dedicated to the God Asclepius that civilization crossed. Rather the basics of medicine today or Hippocrates would have started.

  • Once you visit Kos, you have to visit the most notorious ancient medical and religious center of hellenistic and roman period.  more »
  • The ruins are no longer maintained, the city gives priority to bar and restaurant rather than its historical sites. I think it's so distressing to see these relics of the past in such States.

  • Very nice place and excellent view of the town. A must see.
  • Very nice place to visit if you are in Kos island. Thiese ruins represent an important part in the history of modern medicine. Hippocrates himself taught here. In addition of the ruins, there is also a small modern museum wort visiting. You can take a taxi from Kos town and it pays around 10€. Kos taxi drivers are ok.
  • An amazing place, well maintained and the information available is great and very informative, they also offer guided tours. When we visited a few weeks ago, the cost of 8€ was very reasonable. It gives you great insight into a magnificent era of Greece history.
  • Noddy train goes every hour at half past the hour from next to the harbour. Last train at 1530. €7 for a return ticket. Stunning ruins. Takes an hour to see it all. Incredible view from the top. Well worth it.
  • One of the best archaeological sites in greece. Great view
