Balos Lagoon, Kissamos

4.4
#1 of 14 in Things to do in Kissamos
Beach Nature / Park
Balos Lagoon resides on the uninhabited island off the northwestern coast of Crete. The lagoon features warm and shallow waters, making it a popular spot for families with small children. At the height of the tourist season, daily ferries running from the nearby Kissamos port bring hundreds of visitors to the beach. Avoid the crowds by taking your swim early in the morning, before the Kissamos ferries arrive. You can also spend a few solitary moments by exploring the ruins of a small Roman settlement, located just north of the lagoon. The island offers limited tourist facilities, so bring lots of drinking water and a light snack. Balos Lagoon is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Kissamos Edition.

  • Reachable from Kissamos in minutes you have to navigate by car for 7 km on a dirt road 10 speed because we risk breaking the machines apart from the road to the sea without protection so it's a must go slowly. After that you Park 2 km walking path and preferably with gymnastics and comfortable shoe because the path is fairly tortuous. Payment €1 apiece. The scenery that you will see from above will leave you speechless. Balos is also accessible from the sea with organised tours but I think it's worth going there to enjoy the view from above. Obviously coming down you will be surprised by nature's beauty. The sea is spectacular. If you want to go early and umbrellas because are few otherwise you'll have kilometers of free beach available. A bar to get a drink and tease. The climb is hard, especially with the scorching sun but slowly and with some stops to taste you get to the top. But once you're forced to see this wonder. Is a feast for the eyes and mind.

  • Wonderful scenery of unique beauty. Worth visiting by car rather than by boat. Follow the dirt road up to the parking and then downhill walk. There is of course a hassle, especially if you have small children, but the sight that compensates you. As for the ascent there are donkeys (10 €). Be sure to go very morning to enjoy the party without the world. By reaching the first boat-around 11:30-lost beauty. There are umbrellas and a canteen for the basics

  • If you are in this area of Crete you can't lose it. After covering the tarmac road you arrive on that dirt road, you have to pay a small entrance fee (€1 per person in July, I don't know if it varies in August). Don't be scared by the road which is overlooking the sea: it is still comfortable and onwards without problems. Go early in the morning (9.30/10 at most) so you can park at the nearest point otherwise you'll have to do it along the way. From there, arm yourself with patience and start walking path (I did it in flip flops on the outward and return journeys without problems but are a sporty!) on a dirt road, with stones and ladders. Will be approximately 1 km. Occasionally stand admiring the view from the top, which is impossible to see if you arrive by boat because it is spectacular! Once you arrive at the bottom you will find a corner in this paradise, settle down there and explore the lagoon: is magnificent!

Where to stay in Kissamos

Stay close to Crete's sandy beaches by booking a room at a seafront hotel in Kissamos. Although pricey, rooms with sea views fill up early in the season, so if you arrive late or without reservations, look for one of the area's family-run guesthouses. If you need more space and privacy for the entire family, consider the town's self-catering apartments, which provide air-conditioned bedrooms, fully equipped kitchens, and complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the premises.
