Balos Beach and Lagoon, Kissamos

(5,000+ reviews on the web)
Beach
Balos Beach and Lagoon resides on the uninhabited island off the northwestern coast of Crete. The lagoon features warm and shallow waters, making it a popular spot for families with small children. At the height of the tourist season, daily ferries running from the nearby Kissamos port bring hundreds of visitors to the beach. Avoid the crowds by taking your swim early in the morning, before the Kissamos ferries arrive. You can also spend a few solitary moments by exploring the ruins of a small Roman settlement, located just north of the lagoon. The island offers limited tourist facilities, so bring lots of drinking water and a light snack. Balos Beach and Lagoon is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Kissamos Edition.

  • Although crowded with thousands (not hundrerd but thousands!!) of tourists, this place is worth going. The images you see online of the beach are exactly what you see... this is not photoshopped at al...  more »
  • Two kilometers, most steps, gusting wind, temperature of cold in April, but breathtaking, surrounded by sheep and fragrant flowers, the lagoons have a beautiful Turquoise, the sand is fine and the water clear, at this time only the most foolhardy bathe, but in summer it will be beautiful.

  • Great place. Feasible access by car (Peugeot 107 loaded with 2 suitcases and 2 people). No damage. Arrived on the scene several walk trails: of course stunning Beach (sand rose and turquoise) and the solar clock to 1 hour walk from the parking lot. Predict the day for the 2 markets otherwise half a day at least. Unfortunately once on the beach of waste everywhere (plastics, metal burned, etc.) but especially cakes oil cover the rocks and a part of the sand. Maybe this will be cleaned up for the season?
