Balos Beach and Lagoon, Kissamos

(4.4/5 based on 5,000+ reviews on the web)
Balos Beach and Lagoon resides on the uninhabited island off the northwestern coast of Crete. The lagoon features warm and shallow waters, making it a popular spot for families with small children. At the height of the tourist season, daily ferries running from the nearby Kissamos port bring hundreds of visitors to the beach. Avoid the crowds by taking your swim early in the morning, before the Kissamos ferries arrive. You can also spend a few solitary moments by exploring the ruins of a small Roman settlement, located just north of the lagoon. The island offers limited tourist facilities, so bring lots of drinking water and a light snack. Balos Beach and Lagoon is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Kissamos Edition.

  • We took the boat from Kissamos to get to Balos Lagoon. When we arrived the view of the lagoon was stunning. Even though the boat was full, there seemed to be plenty of space on the beach to relax and ...  more »
  • Surely it is a must to Crete! Very unique beach and crystal clear water. Can be reached on foot, with a walk of about 15 min or by boat. Take water! If you go there early in the morning or in the evening, otherwise the beauty of this beach is overshadowed by the huge amount of tourists. Also, if you got the hottest hours, it will be difficult to find parking near the path leading to the lagoon. Although I do not share at all the practice, the descent can be made on the back of a donkey.
