  • We hiked all the way up to this monastery from Kalambaka. It's a challenge: lots of steps and sometimes the path is really inclined. But, as you're walking in the middle of the nature, you also get to...  more »
  • The climb is one of the prettiest (stairs carved into the rock), but there is only a small chapel to see and a nice view of kalambaka and the plain of Thessaly

  • Has an exceptional position and not easy access as many the stairs to do and being a bit of a walk from the paved road. The Church is small but with beautiful frescoes and the terrace near the croce bianca offers a beautiful view of the valley below. The only monastery that preserves an atmosphere of silence, of austerity and the only one who has no gift shop. In addition to the main street can be reached by following a well marked "monopatia" traveling from Kalambaka and goes into the Woods, I did, and it's worth it.

  • Reasons to visit Meteora monasteries Six amazing monasteries are built on giant rocks which are composed of conglomerate and sandstone. These rock pillars are aged over 60 million years and rise to 400 meters in heightThe Greek word ‘Meteora’ means ‘suspended in air’Originally 24 monasteries were built here by the monks, between 14th and 16th century. But only 6 of them have survived through the timeUntil the 18th century, Meterora monasteries were served as a center of art and scholarshipHoly monastery of great meteoron, holy monastery of varlaam, holy monastery of rousanou, holy monastery of St. Nicholas Anapausas, Holy monastery of St. Stephen and the Holy monastery of trinity are the existing Meteora monasteriesToday, Meteora is a popular rock-climbing site and a world heritage site. It is also surrounded by beautiful hills and river valleys.
  • They use religion for economic benefit only. They do not let athletes climb up to do what they love. They have set a ticket for 3euro . DO NOT PAY
  • Amazing place, especially if you arrive by taking the trekking trail. The view (of it and from it) is incredible, and the peace you feel being so high up in the middle of the Meteora mountains is absolutely unique.
  • This is a breathtaking monastery and the one can feel that this is holy ground. It is a heavenly place. Bless those who are there.
  • Maybe the best one of the six meteoron still alive. The view is wonderful and the atmosphere you breathe is magical!
