  • Dodona is a sanctuary dedicated to Zeus where a sacred oracle (priests are interpreted the rustling of the leaves of oak in the wind). It is located in Epirus, on the slopes of Mount Tomaros. After Herodotus, it is the oldest Greek oracle, dating back perhaps to the 2nd millennium BC. Archaeological traces seem to confirm this, showing rituals from the 15th century BC. Unlike what happened to Delphi, the fame of the oracle of Dodona is not translated by an ambitious architectural programme. The pinnacle of the sanctuary is located under the reign of Pyrrhus, between-297 and-272. It is from this time that the theatre date to accommodate musical and dramatic contests accompanying the feast of Naia, in honour of Zeus. The sanctuary was used until the end of the fourth century a.d., when Theodosius banned the pagan cults and, as such, his cut the sacred oak. The theatre of Dodona is one of the largest in Greece, with a capacity of 25000 spectators. It was built at the beginning of the 3rd century BC and rediscovered in the 1960s. The monumental appearance of the building is enhanced by the addition of a support made up of imposing towers. The large adjoining stadium is also involved in this set. In Roman times, as for many other theatres in Greece, her orchestra was modified to serve as an arena.
