Skaros Rock, Imerovigli

#1 of 9 in Things to do in Imerovigli
Must see · Geologic Formation · Nature / Park
Skaros Rock once housed a castle that protected the 200 Catholic settlers who called the town home. The town of Skaros was the capital of the island of Santorini until multiple earthquakes caused families to leave. Today the site offers views from the lookout over the flat-top rock next to the sea. The Chapel of Agios Ioannis Apokefalistheis stands silent over the abandoned town. The white buildings high on the plateau are often pictured in postcards of Greece, and it's not uncommon to see a wedding party on the hills among the cafe terraces. • A must do when in Santorini. It is a slow and steady climb so bring water as it gets hot! At the very top the last bit requires a touch more serious rock climbing than one might expect so wear decent....  more »

  • Gorgeous views of the caldera. But beware, to get onto the top is a proper rock climb. If you have the wrong shoes or no experience, should be avoided due to risk of serious injury!  more »
  • Lovely adventure
  • Incredible views, specially at the sunset which creates a mythical scenery. It’s a must-do when you’re in Santorini.
  • This is a must when in santorini. Go late afternoon and enjoy the sunset without a crowd. It is as impressive then in Oia and you don't have to squeeze for a spot to see it. The hike up there is not really difficult, just don't wear flip flops. With sneaker you are fine.
  • The views from the top of the rock are amazing. The path to the rock is nicely paved and the path around the rock is manageable for most people with average, ambulatory mobility. But the final climb on top of the rock is a vertical climb of 8-10metres on the actual rock, without railing. It’s a bit of a struggle, especially as some of the material you’re holding onto may come off. And don’t do it in flip flops - at all!
  • A masive rock, nice views of the caldera from its feet.
