Morosini Fountain (Lion's Fountain), Heraklion

3.8
Relax by Morosini Fountain (Lion's Fountain), the ornate Venetian fountain that serves as the picturesque meeting point of the city. Featuring four lions with water gushing from their mouths, the fountain was constructed to supply Heraklion with unlimited drinking water. The basin stands on a circular base that is composed of eight lobes, making it easy for multiple people to fill their water jars simultaneously. The lobes feature relief scenes from Greek mythology, primarily Tritons, dolphins, nymphs, and mythical water beings. • Such a lovely place to sit and relax, or sit and eat. Especially in the sun, which is likely in Crete. This is a lovely part of a lovely city.
  • The Lions Fountain is in Cerner Square in Heraklion, and finding parking can be a little challenging on one of the surrounding streets. It's fun at night with many street musicians. Beautiful City view of new and old architecture. Lots of shops and restaurants. Fun for the evening!
  • A very busy and alive square with an excellent monument characteristic of the Venetian Architecture. Loads of places to sit for a quick coffe. Must try to sit for a bougatsa at philosophies and admire the square.
  • Venetian fountains. Very touristy around here - but nice coffee shops here with outdoor seating.
  • Nice Square in the historic centre of the town, the fountain is in the middle of it. Many cafes and done beautiful buildings around it.

Where to stay in Heraklion

Heraklion serves as a convenient base for exploring Crete and draws big crowds with its centrally located hotels, which offer free Wi-Fi, secure parking, private swimming pools, and fitness facilities. Although pricey, staying in the city center also keeps you near the area's top shopping, dining, and entertainment.
