Morosini Fountain (Lion's Fountain), Heraklion

3.8
Relax by Morosini Fountain (Lion's Fountain), the ornate Venetian fountain that serves as the picturesque meeting point of the city. Featuring four lions with water gushing from their mouths, the fountain was constructed to supply Heraklion with unlimited drinking water. The basin stands on a circular base that is composed of eight lobes, making it easy for multiple people to fill their water jars simultaneously. The lobes feature relief scenes from Greek mythology, primarily Tritons, dolphins, nymphs, and mythical water beings. the walk into the city down to the fortress is worth a visit. The fountain is beautiful. The place to relax on a terrace before peep the hospitality lodge or to tickle the feet in a fish spa.

This square contains the heart of the nightlife of Heraklion. In the pedestrian zone ... between souvenir shops restaurants and lounges--leisurely afternoon both that evening!

Nice to see at night when lit up, usually has some kind of restoration work taking place. Around it are multiple eateries and cafés. Locals use it as a meeting point because of its central location. It does get quite busy on this square especially in the day time.

Nice little piazza. Bustling, fringed by many taverna. When we visited the fountain was out of commission and surrounded by scaffolding.

Morosini fountain is a Venetian piece of art in the centre of Heraklion. A must see in tgis city. Stay for a coffee and a traditional sweet bougatsa in one of the cafeterias around it.

Beautiful fountain. The square is better after all the work done. Still, you can see elements of the Venetian design and influence on a couple of buildings.

Easy meeting point. The streets nearby are worth exploring, filled with boutique stores and cafes.
