Gain an understanding of Cretan history through exhibits spanning the Byzantine era to World War II at Historical Museum of Crete. Founded in 1953 in a neoclassical building formerly known as the House of Kalokairinos, the museum showcases the Nikos Kazantzakis collection, featuring the study and library from the author's home, personal effects, manuscripts of his works, and first editions of his books in various languages. Other exhibits highlight the works of renowned Cretan artist, El Greco, and the traditional crafts of the island, including examples of ceramics, sculptures, coins, jewelry, wall paintings, and heirlooms. • This museum is discreet and less touted than the archaeological museum; Yet, it is just as interesting! (Of course, the two museums not interested in the same things) In addition to the history of the island, the Museum to discover the Cretan traditions. This museum us really surprised by the quality of its exhibitions, we highly recommend!

  • The Museum is discreet from the outside, but very interesting to see. It sums up the history of the island: byzantine, Arabic, Venetian, Ottoman and modern era up to independence. The different eras are illustrated by well presented and filled objects. Museography is overall well done, we enjoyed installation interactive to illuminate buildings of Heraklion on a map and flag folklore, art lovers can also appreciated works of El Greco exhibited at the Museum. Finally, you can enjoy a drink on a terrace with a view of the port.

  • Great museum for all those history buffs who wish to learn more about the island of Crete and its history. A lot of information about the many empires that ruled Crete (Byzantium, Venetian and Turkish). Highly enjoyable.
  • Great museum. Remember, this museum is more about medieval to modern times. Don't expect antiquities.
  • Unique experience for byzantine art lovers.
  • I liked a lot the WW2 sector
  • Good service and well made exhibition.
