Trip Planner: Europe / Greece / Crete / Heraklion Prefecture / Heraklion / Castello del Molo (Koules)
The mighty Venetian fortress of Castello del Molo (Koules) towers over Heraklion Harbor. Today one of the island's popular sightseeing spots, the two-story castle was originally built in the early 13th century to store foodstuffs and military supplies. Much of the building's current form was established during its 1523-1540 restoration. Although current reconstruction has closed the site indefinitely, you can still admire the formidable architecture from outside, soak up the rich historical atmosphere, and enjoy the scenic seaside setting. Make sure to visit the eastern wall to view the lion crest of Venice, still clearly visible. It has a good museum within the fort, and at the top open space provides great view of the city and the harbor. more »
perfect spot if you're a history lover. I love the history and the view of the city and sea, however I found a lot of basic info to be lacking. There were plenty of text blurbs all over inside detailing historical battles and found shipwrecks, but I couldn't find any info on how the fortress was used in the past. I wanted to know what each of the rooms were, how they've been used over time, in what year was the fortress last used, etc. Maybe a guided tour would have been more informative, I just wish that info had been on the plaques. but all. in all , was good.
Very cool history and excessively beautiful view of the sea
Lovely to walk around and read its history
The museum staff are so nice here and they explain the history of the sight very well.
Small fortress at Heraklion port worth a visit. The exhibition is well organized and the view is amazing.
