  • After the docking, the boat 'cruise' spits out its passengers in a single file which is progressing towards the same place. By far (if you came with the previous boat), you will see that continuous line progress following irregularities in the way, which can help to take tourists to these good old Lemmings which drove one of my favorite video games of the last century. Having been part of the previous batch, I am not being critical as there is hardly any other ways to access this little jewel of the island. The Venetian Citadel and the turquoise waters are worth the detour and so worse if there is crowd... This is one of the most beautiful things to do on this side of the ridge. TIP: from what I've seen, there are several boats (from the same company) which make the tour GRAMVOUSA-BALOS including a VERY large (certainly 1000 passengers). As you cannot predict which boat will do what schedule during your booking by internet, I give you my experience: staying far enough (Chania) port and as all schedules have the same number of hours (first parties = first revenues), I chose a boat at 10:40. Arrived well before 10: 00, asked me if I wanted to leave at 10:20 showing me the concerned (much cuter) boat, that I agreed. Double result: first on the (really not negligible) island and nice boat! Conclusion: get there early enough to take advantage of the opportunities.

  • Anyone who chooses to ferry to the Balos lagoon we recommend choosing a visit to the island of Gramvousa where there is a Venetian Fortress. The entrance to the fortress itself requires a light effort but this is a small expense considering what views you are waiting for the fortress!

  • Imeri Gramvoussa is a wild and rocky island in front of the beautiful lagoon of Balos. Reachable from the port of Kissamos with an hour browsing. Atop a Venetian castle of triangular pyramid shape. Dates from 1579-1584, was destroyed and rebuilt in 1630.

  • After the hike uphill at midday when it is especially hot and sunny, it's not that impressive as a ruin. Also not easy to walk on a rocky path in flip flops, so bring hiking sandals at a minimum. But view is great. Rated 3 stars due to the boat tour which is packed with a ton of ppl, making gramvousa very crowded when everyone unloads. Beach is small but quaint, rocky entrance to the water so bring water sandals. Unfortunately if you do a boat tour you will arrive at the hottest point in the day. we try to visit Cretan ruins in the morning due to the heat and sun after 11:00am. This is in August.
  • Great views from the top. It's good to have stable shoes so you won't hurt yourself while going up which btw is a great exercise.
  • Perfect experience that includes a lot of stairs! The view and the feeling is more than rewarding.
  • The BEST of Creta ! Historically, mystical, beautiful island !
  • Very nice place! Beautiful views. History from XVI century.
