  • We took the cable car down and walked around a bit in the old port. It was extremely hot and the people I was with wanted to take the donkeys back up (the cable car line was ridiculously long). For 6 ...  more »
  • Go down to the old port, dodging the excrement of the poor donkeys/horses harnessed to "entertain" tourists, not worth it. The hike is challenging if you faced during the hottest hours and then water must have with itself. Coming back to the donkeys, it is disgusting to see how they are treated ... stop either at the beginning or at the end of the stairs with only the top a small roof to "protect them" from the heat. We haven't seen buckets of water and/or food, but our eyes are presented these cute animals being "whipped" also on the muzzle to make them go ahead while carrying tourists selfish. They are beautiful, dressed up, but that's OK caressing them and take a picture and nothing more. The scale as mentioned above is full of excrement and is not cleaned if not sometimes. The view is nice but it's still the same that can be seen from above. The old port is not quaint. There are some private boats but most are those used by cruise ships to bring tourists to the island. If someone were to ask me if it's worth it go down, my answer is definitely no! If you want to visit the old port use the "Cable Car" and not donkeys. Ah recommended sneakers!!!

  • This is not an easy journey but it's definitel a challenge especially when the weather is in the 30's. I did it both ways but you could cheat and hire a mule for 6 euros  more »

Where to stay in Fira

The most unique way to experience Fira is to stay in one of its famous cave hotels or cliffside suites. The city in Santorini also has many spas and hotels to accommodate the massive waves of summer tourists on this island, and few are cheap. For more affordable options, venture further away from the cliffside. Or, if you're willing to spend a bit more on lodging, opt for a caldera view. There are a number of homes and villas for rent here as well, just be sure to check with your host about how exactly to get to your lodging, as many places are not accessible by road and require a journey by foot along stone steps.
