Spinalonga (Kalydon), Elounda

(4.4/5 based on 5,500+ reviews on the web)
Spinalonga (Kalydon) sits as a rocky islet floating in the blue waters of the Gulf of Elounda. The region's 16th century Venetian rulers carved this rock out of Crete's coastline and then built a fortress on it to protect the gulf from hostile ships. The old fortress, apparently as impregnable to the passage of time as it once was to would-be invaders, still dominates the islet and attracts nearly 30,000 annual visitors. Split your time on the little island between the Venetian fort and one of several beaches, which are lapped by shallow, calm waters. There are no tourist facilities here, so bring your own food and water. Make Spinalonga (Kalydon) a centerpiece of your Elounda vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Elounda travel itinerary maker.

  • Very impressive! When you consider that everything is still not so long ago. A visit to the island and the worth is in any case read in their history.

  • In 1905 was used as a leper colony where herded all the lepers of Crete, who first were isolated in "Meskinia", outside the Heraklion and outbreak of contamination and for the rest of the people. During the Italian and German occupation the conquerors did not dare to release lepers and was forced to make them feed themselves, since the opposite Plaka village have flush and had shooed residents in other villages, all the coast region had nests with fortify, underground tunnels, minefields because they feared invasion of English in that part. Nor ever entered the island Italian or German and that is why illegally operated radios and Director doctor Grammatikakis copy news in London and Cairo and peddled as news bulletins to residents. Eventually the 1957 closed iathentwn of lepers by using antibiotic medications.
