Chrysoskalitissa Monastery is a 17th-century Orthodox Christian monastery located on the island of Crete, Greece. Located on the south-west coast of the island, in the municipal unit Innachori, it lies some 72 kilometres south-west of Chania. Built up on rocks some 35 metres high, it overlooks the Libyan Sea. According to Cretian tradition, the name of the monastery is derived from one of the ninety steps which lead there, which is said to be golden ("chryso" in Greek). The monastery is dedicated to the Holy Trinity ("Agia Triada") and the Dormition of Virgin Mary ("Koimisis Theotokou").

  • Visited this monastery while on our way to Elafonisi beach. Getting there is easy, even if you take the inland route. It is not advisable to take that along the coast, which is definitely more direct and evocative, but challenging for drivers. Visiting the monastery costs 2 €, price certainly top saw the real absence of things to visit. The monastery in question is nothing more than a small chapel with two adjoining rooms with within objects. The location and views are certainly very suggestive, but 2us seemed a bit much. All in all it's a stop worth making if you are going or returning from Elafonisi.

  • driving to the beach, or you can enter! Only Golden step you don't see, though the claim that truly believer sees it, but alas, alas there are 65 and 66-1st (gold) on the history gave the Turks left to save the monastery! Though ... ... can someone her and finds ... can you and lucky:)))) in the upper tier are not allowed-fenced and not realized the residential room there or not (such as the convent of it) But on the first floor rooms abandoned and navalen just junk there, and behind the walls of the monastery building waste heap! Depressing such filth in a location: ((((But you can see this is the lazy nature of the local people!

  • Amazing! You really know you are not in Kansas anymore! The views and admosphere of the place is really apart!
  • A relaxing place on the way to Elafonisis.
  • Calm, peacefull ...
  • A very pleasant break on our journey south. The monastery is very small but has a rich history. The admission at 2€ is fair. There is a small gift shop with reasonably priced souvenirs pertinent to the monastery and the orthodox church. There is a small folklore museum too. I was fascinated by the old icons and the 19th century hymnal in both Greek and Arabic. It shows clearly the struggle with the Ottoman Empire as it is crumbling. We also saw the school that was kept hidden from the Ottomans too. The church building is compact but has some lovely icons. Good views from balcony. Some building work on I'm October 2014.
  • Monastery of Chrisosikalitissis, a nun and a monk living there. Located near the Cretan dream beach of Elafonissi, always worth a detour. Alternative program to beach life!

  • It deserves a stop, if only to enjoy the spectacular views from the monastery to the sea
