Archaeological Site of Delos, Delos

4.5
#1 of 9 in Things to do in Delos
Hop on a ferry to see Archaeological Site of Delos, the birthplace of twins Apollo and Athena--the god of light and the goddess of wisdom. The entire island is uninhabited and serves as an archaeological site, so explore at your leisure. Climb to the top of the highest hill for a panoramic view of the surrounding sea and nearby islands. Take photographs of the famous stone lions that grace the road leading to the three temples of Apollo, and at the museum view some of the artifacts discovered in what is now a World Heritage Site. Consider hiring a guide in advance to help you understand what you are seeing. Shade is limited, and the cafe on the island is pricey, so bring a hat, sunscreen, water, and snacks. Half an hour browsing and you to Delos, the Pompeii of Greece. A FANTASTIC and well preserved archaeological site. A walk of more than an hour in an entire city of the past. A guide, then (a archeloga) great. Do not miss it absolutely

When arriving from the boat there is an old lady, not very tall, with blond hair who is an official guide, and very agressive to get people to join her tour. She charges 10€. Her tour only lasts 50 mi...  more »

What are the best preserved archaeological sites I've been to. My guide was an archaeologist who was very insightful and entertained me for an entire day. One of the best experiences I've had.

Wow!!! The place give you goosebumps. A must do if you are in Mykonos. A couple of tidbits. Budget as long as possible, 5 hours is about right. Winds pick up in the afternoon so the boats may stop after 3 pm so try to get on the first am boat typically 9 or 10, check the night before. Another thing you might want to do the night before is pick up a book on Delos and run through it- much better than the guided tours and really allows you to place the structures and finds along the timeline. Be ready for heat! A wide brimmed hat is a must. There is a ridiculously expensive cafe on the Island, so bring a couple of liters of water and have a good breakfast. If so inclined being some cat food along too, it will not go to waste as in addition to the lizards, cats seem to be the only other inhabitants. Walk slowly and hop off the "path", amazing views of everything from the lions to the mosaics can be had if you change your viewing angle a bit. And go up the hill-a view from up high pulls everything together... The museum itself is pretty typical of smaller Greek museums. Lots and lots of artifacts with minimal descriptions and background. Again, read a book on Dilos, prior to your visit and bring it with you, to get the most out of it!

When we visited, the museum was closed for renovation, otherwise would have been 5 stars. One of the hoghlights of our trip to Greece. Skip the guided tour, there is much more to see beyond what the tour can cover in a short period of time. If you are at leisure, take the morning tour and stay on the island until the afternoon boat.

Great experience seeing such historic ruins up close and relatively interactively. I would suggest 2 hours is enough here unless you wanted to spend the day Hocking.

well worth a half-day drip from mykonos. 30,000 wealthy merchants used to live here at the peak of its power, now archaeologists are excavating the massive ruins
