Old Fortress Corfu, Corfu Town

4.3
Must see · World heritage site · Ruin · Military Facility
Taking up a large part of a rocky peninsula renowned for its ocean views, Old Fortress Corfu is linked to the rest of the city by a fixed iron bridge. Visit the impressive site, which sits on the spot once occupied by a Byzantine structure that was largely replaced by the Venetians during the 18th century. Although the fortress rebutted three consecutive Ottoman sieges, it eventually fell under the French rule and joined the Greek territories in 1864. Before you enter, admire the marble statue in front of German general Von Schulenburg, who successfully defended the city from the last siege in 1716. • Get here early to beat the heat and the crowds. Delightful panorama from the lighthouse area. You can also access the Corfu Sailing Club, and note the small pebble beach that the locals go swimming...  more »

  • This is a great place to spend a couple of hours. The views are spectacular and the fortress itself hugely impressive - can see how it held off sieges 3 times! There are some info boards and a a small collection of cannons and a couple of mortars but the place more or less speaks for itself. There's also a nice cafe to sit and watch the billionaires yachts :)
  • The old fortress is very nice. The view from the top is amazing. Take water with you and cover your head because over there there is almost no shadow and in the summer it's very hot.
  • Impressive old historical castle one of the "must see" destinations at the city of Corfu. A clock tower, lighthouse, museum, church and many other historical buildings are existing into the walls of the castle. There are also many nice spots with panoramic view of the area and the city of Corfu.
  • Very reasonably priced entrance fee and interesting to see the different architectural influences throughout the extensive island Fortress from the different cultures that rotated power of this part of Corfu over the centuries. Has an excellent coffee/tea room in the centre of the Fortress.
  • I don't understand why you must pay 6 euro for access: there is no guide, no readable text boards or any basic info. You must conduct serious investigations to locate the toilets... There is a good view from top over the bay and old city.
