  • fun to walk around in the old town, where you will find the marketplace Agora, many characteristic shops in the area, the old Venetian Harbour, makes the whole thing very impressive shop along these streets decorated and well maintained, it's fun, better late in the evening! Crete is a special island and we fell in love right away!

  • The markets I think they are the mirror of the population. To chania is however become tourist market strong prevalence, excluding some fish stalls and food products. I heartily recommend the bakery-bakery that is located at the edge of the South side of the market. As confermatoci by friends Cretans is bread and bakery products (cakes, salted, stuffed) among the most delicious in the island.

  • There are a couple of really good places to eat in here which also do takeaway. A decent fruit and veg shop, a couple of good butchers and fishmongers but most of the shops sell exactly the same stuff and once you have seen the olive oil soap, herbs and spices and tea towels you are pretty much done. Lovely old building though which leads to the old town which is a real treat.
  • Cute semi-indoor market with plenty of food and souvenirs. I found a lantern for about 5 euro cheaper than in old town near the harbor. We escaped the rain here for about an hour and enjoyed some shopping.
  • A packed market place, just like a Tunisian souk. Full of leather goods, clothing, sweets and spices. Larger inside than it looks like on the outside. Friendly enough place with helpful people all around.
  • Worth having a look round the place, all the stalls pretty much sell the same products but not a bad thin when there's lots of tasty local produce on offer.
  • Very much there for tourists, I think the produce found there you can definitely find more cheap and better quality somewhere else.

Where to stay in Chania Town

Many package tourists on Crete stay in comfortable hotels outside Chania Town, though this lively seaport offers accommodations ranging from inexpensive hostels to five-star resorts. If you too prefer to stay out of town, consider one of the surrounding area's well-appointed villas and apartments, which provide secure parking and access to private outdoor spaces. Stick to the city's harbor area for fine shopping and dining, or check out the old town's boutique hotels for good atmosphere, friendly service, and proximity to sandy beaches.
