Chrysoskalitissa Monastery is a 17th-century Orthodox Christian monastery located on the island of Crete, Greece. Located on the south-west coast of the island, in the municipal unit Innachori, it lies some 72 kilometres south-west of Chania. Built up on rocks some 35 metres high, it overlooks the Libyan Sea. According to Cretian tradition, the name of the monastery is derived from one of the ninety steps which lead there, which is said to be golden ("chryso" in Greek). The monastery is dedicated to the Holy Trinity ("Agia Triada") and the Dormition of Virgin Mary ("Koimisis Theotokou").

  • A relaxing place on the way to Elafonisis.
  • Calm, peacefull ...
  • A very pleasant break on our journey south. The monastery is very small but has a rich history. The admission at 2€ is fair. There is a small gift shop with reasonably priced souvenirs pertinent to the monastery and the orthodox church. There is a small folklore museum too. I was fascinated by the old icons and the 19th century hymnal in both Greek and Arabic. It shows clearly the struggle with the Ottoman Empire as it is crumbling. We also saw the school that was kept hidden from the Ottomans too. The church building is compact but has some lovely icons. Good views from balcony. Some building work on I'm October 2014.
  • Monastery of Chrisosikalitissis, a nun and a monk living there. Located near the Cretan dream beach of Elafonissi, always worth a detour. Alternative program to beach life!

  • It deserves a stop, if only to enjoy the spectacular views from the monastery to the sea
