Ancient Aptera, Chania Town
(4.3/5 based on 420+ reviews on the web)
Tour the remains of massive Roman water cisterns and wander through structures spanning over 2,000 years of history at Ancient Aptera. Walk through an ancient theater, the remnants of several Doric temples, and a Roman peristyle villa, then make your way to the summit of the site for a sweeping view of the area. The uneven ground and climb to the summit may be challenging for people with mobility issues. There are no places to eat or drink, so bring plenty of snacks and water. Be sure to check the attraction's website for opening and closing times, which change seasonally. • The only issues I found to Aptera are hours of operation (better inquire why I found it closed several times) and ... flies, there are several! The site is enjoyable, safe and decently preserved, there is a central building with a small Museum (unpretentious) and some (almost useless) booklet but we must point out that the site is maintained by volunteers and offered by private funds, you do not pay and recently shared the excavations (the city is truly vast and mostly still buried). There is a beautiful view and being high up in the air is pleasant, that's why there are the foundations of several Roman villas, my son had much to cavort among the ruins to invent adventures and is impressed. All in all it's a nice place to visit, genuine, old and the road is pleasant and not too long (it's on coastal Souda in Chania, before following the sign towards the mountain), it is worthwhile to continue after the visit to the castle that you see on the headland (always closed but with a splendid view of Souda) from where you can see what's left of the wall that protected the city).

  • Traveled to Aptera and it was well worth the drive. The site contains many remains from many periods primarily Roman but also a Turkish fort. The Roman cisterns are fantastic with one you can walk int...  more »
  • We spotted the sign and detoured on a whim. The site closes at 3pm but the staff were packing up for lunch at 1pm and let us in for free! The amphitheater is recently excavated and interesting - there...  more »
