Categories: Ruins, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4.3/5 based on 420+ reviews on the web
Tour the remains of massive Roman water cisterns and wander through structures spanning over 2,000 years of history at Ancient Aptera. Walk through an ancient theater, the remnants of several Doric temples, and a Roman peristyle villa, then make your way to the summit of the site for a sweeping view of the area. The uneven ground and climb to the summit may be challenging for people with mobility issues. There are no places to eat or drink, so bring plenty of snacks and water. Be sure to check the attraction's website for opening and closing times, which change seasonally. • Easy hike starting from Chania or from Rethimno to visit this ancient settlement before Greek and then Roman, Minoan then. Roman remains are those in the best conditions, partly because newer. Interesting tanks and the amphitheatre. Very impressive the small Byzantine Church exists. Well worth exploring, perhaps stopping for lunch in the nearby village in the traditional Tavern.

  • An Aquarian would say that this is a high energy: not surprisingly has been occupied by the minoans, then the Greeks, then the Romans, finally the Orthodox Church. It's a site that represents the layering of centuries and the political changes in Crete: as in any busy agglomeration Repeater the oldest remains are scarce, but the visit is interesting because the vestiges of political statement of successive occupants are well evident. Worth the trip
