Ancient Aptera, Chania Town

(4.3/5 based on 440+ reviews on the web)
Tour the remains of massive Roman water cisterns and wander through structures spanning over 2,000 years of history at Ancient Aptera. Walk through an ancient theater, the remnants of several Doric temples, and a Roman peristyle villa, then make your way to the summit of the site for a sweeping view of the area. The uneven ground and climb to the summit may be challenging for people with mobility issues. There are no places to eat or drink, so bring plenty of snacks and water. Be sure to check the attraction's website for opening and closing times, which change seasonally. Plan your Ancient Aptera visit and explore what else you can see and do in Chania Town using our Chania Town itinerary builder.

  • Close to Chania town 15 km from Rethymno, is the archaeological site of Aptera. I don't know if it goes public transportation from the city because I visited with rental car. It is a place where outside the ancient ruins (churches, cisterns, Theatre), there is an odd one in too good condition fortress and a spectacular view of the area of the Fort. Just below you can also see the beautiful fortress of Intzedin in all its glory. Just for the view is worth the visit.

  • Place for those who not only love beaches. It is worth to drop by and zdeżyć with a little different. Few tourists and not find Aptery in ordinary guide. If you want to odetchnać from the crowd and the hustle and bustle is the place for you.

  • Lose yourself in the fascinating history of Crete by a visit to Aptera. It truly is a crossroads of history where you can see traces of Minoan, Roman, Turkish and Byzantine cultures - right up to WW2....  more »
