I visited Gouvernetou monastery by my own for a hike. The tour starts from the chapel where you can see the monastery and the monks rooms, and after you start walking towards the sea. The pathway is s...  more »

Beautiful fortified monastery of Venetian type. Under renovation, but accessible to a large extent. Great calm and sense of peace. The restoration is funded by visitors and not by the State or the EU. The trail of stones after the monastery leads to the cave of the bear then the ruins of Catholicon

The road to it is fun! You go first past another monastery and then you come out on a narrow mountain road which you think where this is going to end. Eventually you row against the monastery to where you can park. You must pass through a gate where you do have the condition to may should read. Please note the right clothes about covering shoulders and legs. As neat as you here as a guest persists. Through the gate on a landscaped path through the Garden towards the old monastery. It is therefore really old .... Once inside you see the church stand in the courtyard where you also see a number of monks. The rest to the Church is old and poorly maintained. It is definitely not a monastery where you walk around with open mouth, but where you can get a right impression of this life. The Greeks themselves attach to this monastery have much value and that you also see to the number of locals that come up. Not really recommended, but that is very personal.

As of now (May 2015) the monastery is under renovation, so you'll see nothing more than the garden. Bear also in mind that the famous path to the sea behind the monastery is said to be closed (there is a notice), but everybody seems to walk it nonetheless.

Very nice monastery, nice and quiet. Nice museum with their silverware. Garden well maintained with many different plants. Fragrant citrus trees.

This dot on the map-the monument of war 1945 (all that figured in Greek), mounted behind the fence of the monastery, at the beginning of the trail to the cave of the Virgin Females. The monastery itself-Moni Erimitou Gkouvernetou Ioannou on map (see companion). Open for visits from 8:00 up to 12:00 days. Remarkable intrinsic painting Temple!
