Parthenon, Athens

(10,000+ reviews on the web)
Ruin Architectural Building
The epitome of the power and glory of ancient Greece, Parthenon serves as part of an ancient group of temples situated on a hill just above modern Athens. Undeniably one of the world's most recognizable structures, the ancient temple features some of the finest elements of Classical architecture, a style of building that has consistently influenced and inspired architects since its completion in the 5th century BCE. Although this building originally was built to honor the goddess Athena, its purpose changed several times over the centuries, and the temple successively transformed into a treasury, fortress, Christian church, and Islamic mosque. • There's no disputing that this is an incredibly important site. I believe it's definitely worth going to if you have the time. It does get incredibly crowded and incredibly hot up there though. Everything that can be removed safely has been and has been replaced with replicas and the real deal placed in the wonderful museum at the foot of the hill. I believe learnt a lot more going to the museum, and if you don't have time to do both I would elect the museum over visiting the site itself.
  • A Window into history of Greece! Visiting the Acropolis gives a wonderful window into the eventful history of Greece. Currently its going extensive restoration so its views are obscured by cranes nevertheless its a sight to see. There is a steep climb so wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to climb. If visiting during summer keep a water bottle with you. There are reduced tickets available at the entrance or you can buy €30 Ticket for various sites and museum valid for 3 days. It would be better to get there early in the morning as later on there are lot of crowds and groups visiting that is not so good if you want take pictures with the monuments. It would take 2-3 hours if you want to see the sites completely. There are amazing view of the Athens city from the hill.
  • Amazing, feel the history under your feet, immerse yourself in the past, beautiful. ProTip: 1) Avoid early mornings, EVERYONE goes in the mornings including tour buses and school kids. 2) Get there with at least 2 hours to check it all out, but preferably 4+ hours. 3) If you aim to be there in the mid-afternoon when it's the hottest, sure, you'll be a little warm, but there's less people so much easier to move about and get all your pictures. 4) Take Water!!!
  • Touring Europe? Or Greece? Well this is a bucket list stop, personally I was underwhelmed. Old things like this need refurbishing, I understand and am glad it happens. But this (with the cranes, concrete injecting, etc) seems almost over the edge from authentic-other than the location. But with imagination and appreciation of history, you still should make it here. We got here without tickets, but a steep climb up from below in the city (metro/bus recommended perhaps). The views were nice and shouldn't be missed. But manage your expectations-Athens in general (in my opinion of course).
  • A must-see. What do you think?! And so much more than just the Parthenon. Exquisite ruins surround the acropolis hill. Go early in the day to avoid the heat and minimize the crowds.
