Parthenon, Athens

4.7
The epitome of the power and glory of ancient Greece, Parthenon serves as part of an ancient group of temples situated on a hill just above modern Athens. Undeniably one of the world's most recognizable structures, the ancient temple features some of the finest elements of Classical architecture, a style of building that has consistently influenced and inspired architects since its completion in the 5th century BCE. Although this building originally was built to honor the goddess Athena, its purpose changed several times over the centuries, and the temple successively transformed into a treasury, fortress, Christian church, and Islamic mosque. • Stunning historical piece of gold of Athens! We spent the whole day up here just absorbing the magnificent structure! Its weird how up here it is relaxing and quiet, and down below in the city its mad and manic! Apart from the pocket of crowds made by tourists, this place was perfect! The views you get are awesome, especially during sunset! Take sunscreen, a good pair of walking shoes and some water for the journey to the top!
  • We went just 2 days ago and it was still packed with tourists and it was very hot, but it was worth it. We got to see some of the reconstruction! I would recommend getting a tour guide because you see it, and it is very cool, but it is even more fun to learn more about it. For example, did you know that the Ancient Greeks associated theater with medicine? There are tour guides walking around the ticket booth. Tickets are $20 per adult, and tickets for children are free! The tour guide is also $20 per person, including children.
  • It is an amazing structure and a grand piece of history. We went in the summer and it was very hot, so make sure you bring water. It gets a bit crowded but nothing too bad, it is all spread out so there wasn’t any crowding. I highly recommend it if you have never been there.
  • Incredible historical place. It does help you to get in touch with what was happening back then, besides it also gives you a 360° view of Athens. The only downside is that due to the volume of people you only get to walk around from a distance, it would be wonderful to get inside (even if through a glass tunnel). There are also plenty of machines and metal structures breaking the view...
  • Very crowded, filled with construction equipment, and the plaques with information told more about the construction than the buildings themselves. Still nice, but not worth €20. I think going to the top of the hill to the South with some binoculars would be better.
