Parthenon, Athens

(9,500+ reviews on the web)
Ruin
The epitome of the power and glory of ancient Greece, Parthenon serves as part of an ancient group of temples situated on a hill just above modern Athens. Undeniably one of the world's most recognizable structures, the ancient temple features some of the finest elements of Classical architecture, a style of building that has consistently influenced and inspired architects since its completion in the 5th century BCE. Although this building originally was built to honor the goddess Athena, its purpose changed several times over the centuries, and the temple successively transformed into a treasury, fortress, Christian church, and Islamic mosque. • How could someone come to Athens and not to visit the sacred rock of the Acropolis. Even until today in Athens gives the magnificence of culture developed and maintained over the years. It is our connection with the past and a reminder of our duty to honour this country.

  • It is an ideal place to start your visit in Athens. You can admire thousands years of history and greatness of the ancient Greek people.  more »
  • If you decide to visit this masterpiece, take your time. Choose an early morning visit, perhaps in Springtime where the Attica sun is better playing with the Pentelian marbles of Parthenon, and shadow...  more »

  • The Acropolis in general is such a vast site with incredible history and spectacular views over Athens and the surrounding mountains and hills. The Parthenon is the jewel of this lofty area though and is truly a sight to see. Due to the abundance of marble I'd recommend wearing decent shoes, especially if there is any moisture. I went at the beginning of January and it wasn't too busy but I hear in summer it gets very busy. The entry to the Acropolis is 10 Euros which is good value. Well recommended.
  • Wow! This is one of the most amazing sightseeing visits we've ever taken on a vacation. You can feel the history on this hill. It's a bit of a hike to get up here but well worth the trip. There is free check-in for bags and strollers near the ticket office.
  • Pay the extortionate fee (10 Euro) if your interests are seeing a tonne of scaffolding and cranes round a badly restored ruin, would much rather have seen it in a natural state of decay and appreciate the ancient methods used to erect it in the first place. Travelled for 2 days out my way hitchhiking to see this and was genuinely disappointed by rude staff and rusty machinery spoiling an incredible sight
  • Have seen this place thousands of times from books and movies. Still impressed me a lot. You can also have a great view of the whole Athens city here.
  • Beautiful. Must see if you are in Athens. I didn't really think much of doing it however I am very glad I did. It only takes about 2 hours to do everything and see all the sights. Top Tip - get there early. It opens around 9am so get there early to avoid the crowds... And the crowds get thick quickly.
