Parthenon, Athens

Ruin Architectural Building
The epitome of the power and glory of ancient Greece, Parthenon serves as part of an ancient group of temples situated on a hill just above modern Athens. Undeniably one of the world's most recognizable structures, the ancient temple features some of the finest elements of Classical architecture, a style of building that has consistently influenced and inspired architects since its completion in the 5th century BCE. Although this building originally was built to honor the goddess Athena, its purpose changed several times over the centuries, and the temple successively transformed into a treasury, fortress, Christian church, and Islamic mosque. • The place is magnificent. A little hard to walk to for some and very crowded in the summer, but so worth it!  more »
  • Of course it is worth seeing along with the Acropolis! Older individuals or those with limited movement may need to pace themselves as it adds up to a bit of a climb which is made worse when the heat ...  more »
  • I went twice. The first, with a guide on a stroll through the city. It is impressing to see the architectural development. They had calculated the optical effect that would be the place where is erected, the weight of the ceiling, everything. The second was just and I appreciate more detailed decorations which had, thanks to the nearby posters. It is a must-see and super ride recommended for everyone.

  • It's just amazing to be at the place that was built over thousands of thousands years ago. It's just unbelievable. However, do the research before you go there, since there is no information or maps for you to learn more and go early to avoid the line and people. Plus if you plan to go to the Zeus's Temple and other sites then it is better deal to get the whole package deal which is € 30 and it is good for 5 days and will save you time and money for other's sites.
  • I mean, seeing the Parthenon is probably one of the main reasons you're in Athens. It's an awesome building with a ton of history to learn about. You should get here as soon as the park opens as it's probably the busiest attraction in Athens. Download the free Rick Steve's tour for a great way to experience the Acropolis.
  • There's no disputing that this is an incredibly important site. I believe it's definitely worth going to if you have the time. It does get incredibly crowded and incredibly hot up there though. Everything that can be removed safely has been and has been replaced with replicas and the real deal placed in the wonderful museum at the foot of the hill. I believe learnt a lot more going to the museum, and if you don't have time to do both I would elect the museum over visiting the site itself.
  • Having visited Athens in 2009, I cannot express how much adventure can be found in one place. So many incredible things to do and see. Spend time learning or brushing up on the culture of an ancient civilization nestled so perfectly in the midst of a bustling Manhattan-esque city.
  • Here some utility tips: Take the time to read beforehand what this building means. Take your time and don't feel the pressure to run through, just because the other are. Come early in the morning if possible, bring water, a sunhat and sun screen. There will be about 20-40 minutes of waiting time. There is no shade once you are up. But, there is a water fountain on the right side of the Parthenon. Wonderful place to go. I would recommend to buy the "cheaper" ticket, since the other ruins are really only for people how want to dig in deeper.

Where to stay in Athens

If you come to Athens for its ancient history, stay in Plaka, a lively neighborhood located within walking distance of the city's major archaeological sites. Although relatively expensive, hotels in this part of town offer spacious rooms, private swimming pools, and rooftop cocktail bars. For less expensive but equally comfortable lodgings, consider boutique hotels and family-run inns in the quiet residential neighborhoods just a short drive south of Plaka. Good rooms fill up early in the season, so plan ahead and book in advance.
