Numismatic Museum, Athens

4.6
#10 of 47 in Museums in Athens
Offering an alternative way to discover Greek history, Numismatic Museum holds one of the world's largest collections of ancient and modern coins. Over half a million artifacts narrate the history of Athens from the 14th century BCE to the present day. In addition to coins, the museum displays thousands of medals and stamps, which come from various excavation sites in mainland Greece. The Neo-classical building, once a private home of celebrated archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann, remains a major draw for architecture buffs. Spend some of your own modern coins in the shady cafe located in the museum garden. Plan your visit to Numismatic Museum and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Athens trip itinerary maker.

We visited mainly because we wanted to see Heinrich Schliemann's house, so we didn't actually see the exhibition. There is a cafe in a lovely garden, a perfect place for a relaxing drink.

Lovely, quiet coffee place with great service. Ideal to relax and take break from the frantic rythms of Athens.

I went to this Museum today and the staff were very kind and welcoming. Expect to spend around 1 hour as the museum is quite small. You will learn about the ancient coins and you will also be able to work out the wage and the purchasing power back in the day. I enjoyed my time here!

Where to stay in Athens

If you come to Athens for its ancient history, stay in Plaka, a lively neighborhood located within walking distance of the city's major archaeological sites. Although relatively expensive, hotels in this part of town offer spacious rooms, private swimming pools, and rooftop cocktail bars. For less expensive but equally comfortable lodgings, consider boutique hotels and family-run inns in the quiet residential neighborhoods just a short drive south of Plaka. Good rooms fill up early in the season, so plan ahead and book in advance.
