A quintessential Athenian attraction, the old town neighborhood of Monastiraki draws visitors by offering a blend of history and shopping. The atmospheric neighborhood is crisscrossed by a network of narrow backstreets, lined by open-air stands and cramped shops offering bargains on everything from vintage shoes and new furniture, to rare books and handmade instruments. Named after its main square, the compact neighborhood represents the Ottoman and Byzantine influences on the city by serving as a home to both an Islamic mosque and Christian church. Avoid the worst of the crowds by exploring the neighborhood early in the morning. Put Monastiraki into our Athens holiday planner to see other points of interest to visit during your vacation in Athens.
