The Goulandris Museum of Natural History is a museum in Kifisia, a northeastern suburb of Athens, Greece. It was founded by Angelos Goulandris and Niki Goulandris in 1965 in order to promote interest in the natural sciences, to raise the awareness of the public, in general, and in particular to call its attention to the need to protect Greece's natural wildlife habitats and species in the danger of extinction. The museum includes large collections of insects, mammals, birds, reptiles, shells, rocks, minerals and fossils, from the rich natural wildlife of the Greek territory. The botanical collections number over 200.000 species of plants, among which there are 145 newly discovered ones, which have been recorded thanks to the museum's research. The kernel of the botanical collection was formed when it acquired the collection of Constantine Goulimis, the author of Wild Flowers of Greece that was illustrated by Niki Goulandris. In the museum's laboratories, scientific research is being carried out in the areas of ecology, botany, zoology, geology, palaeontology and biotechnology. In the exhibition rooms are presented in detail the variety and interdependence of the biocommunities and the floral, animal and geological wealth of Greece.

I like this museum very very much. It is one hour from the centre of Athens. On the one floor it has many animals and on the other one many amazing stones and minerals. It has also a shop where you ca...  more »

Wonderful Museum, although in need of renewal, ideal for schools. Perfect location, has underground parking which was closed for the baptism that served. The coffee space pretty and cool under the trees but after noon just to eat. Accidentally charged us bottled water without the flying. The corrected after spotting us.

The Museum is located in a very good spot and paired easily with a ride in kifissia. As the Museum is very small, with limited exhibits and some of them poor quality. There are no exhibits on marine life, while, without any relevance to the rest of the Museum, shows a skeleton trikeratwps with cats and birds, creating confusion for younger guests. Some storefronts are exhibits that have been moved from their original location and many explanatory signs are difficult to match with the exhibits. The image of some animals is reminiscent of low-level efforts of small provincial museums. The surroundings are excellent and should be part of the visit.

I used to think very highly of this museum and having been there thrice as a kid I expected it to be truly fascinating. Instead I came across a lack of care for the guests in all levels. There was a place where you could supposedly leave things (coats, bags and such) but no one was at the booth and never appeared, there was no air-conditioning though it was hot and there is no flow from one part of the exhibition to the next and no new signs to point the guest to the right direction. The things in the displays are interesting but it has gotten old and no one has cared to upgrade it to current standards. I feel sad looking at my favourite museum turn out like that...

Museum is closed for maintenance and official website does not mention anything.

Where to stay in Athens

If you come to Athens for its ancient history, stay in Plaka, a lively neighborhood located within walking distance of the city's major archaeological sites. Although relatively expensive, hotels in this part of town offer spacious rooms, private swimming pools, and rooftop cocktail bars. For less expensive but equally comfortable lodgings, consider boutique hotels and family-run inns in the quiet residential neighborhoods just a short drive south of Plaka. Good rooms fill up early in the season, so plan ahead and book in advance.
